Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. This has been my concern too. On the Aurora 3 times I drew attention to the mislabelled options. Listed as Gluten free but clearly not, as a coeliac you can tell my look or smell if something is gluten free. Each time the head chef looked through the ingredients with me and each time there was a gluten containing element. Although there was an apology each time, I feel annoyed that it is often viewed as a lifestyle choice, or a fussy eater. I raised my concerns with head office and was assured this would be addressed. On the Ventura two months later, I was twice given gluten containing meals in the MDR, again as my meal looked identical to the other meals on the table I questioned the ingredients, each time the chef confirmed they contained gluten. So it appears as though it makes very little difference if you only eat in the MDR. There have also been a number of occasions where the waiter has taken my meal away at the serving station as they have spotted that it is not gluten free. It has now come to a point where I am cautious about eating without checking and it has definitely impacted my opinions of P&O, so much so that I am now trying other cruise lines.
  2. Yes, it changed. I have the apps on my kindle, it’s not a paper white one. It’s the Kindle HD which you can download apps to, I changed to the HD one for this reason about 4 years ago
  3. Hi Selbourne, really enjoying your blog. With regards to your wife’s kindle, at some point download the BorrowBox app. This links with your local library, which you can usually join online. You can then have a virtual library account, all the new releases and all free. I realise you may not be able to do this on your cruise, but maybe when you get home. Our library also has access to PressReader app which is newspapers and magazines. Both have saved a fortune for me and added to the cruise fund.
  4. On the Ventura at the moment. Last night was a rough crossing, 77 knots relative wind speed. Cabins were flooded and some with loss of power. We arrived at Vigo a day early as the captain wanted to avoid the worst of the weather.
  5. Thank you, the Fairmont is a great idea, as it appears the only flight from Vancouver to LHR is at 20:55 (BA flights)
  6. Port Royal you have been so helpful, thank you for taking the time to respond
  7. Thank you both, I have now contacted the travel agent to see if there are alternatives flights
  8. I’m new to Cunard, and have a few questions which I hope someone will be kind enough to answer. We have booked on the 39 night Japan and Alaska in May and the TA has now advised us of flight times. We arrive in Tokyo at 7:30 am, the day before the cruise and have been told that Cunard will provide the hotel. Can anyone advise how this works? We realise that we probably won’t have a room to check into, but based on UK time and travel time I don’t think I will be in any fit state to wander Tokyo until check in time. It’s a similar situation for the flight home. We depart Vancouver at around 9pm. If we are taken from the ship during morning disembarkation, does this mean we are expected to wait in departures with our luggage from morning until around 6pm when flight check in opens? There is an excursion advertised on the website to book which will take you around Vancouver and then to the airport, working the timings if we booked this we would arrive at the airport at around 1pm, so still a five hour wait in departures. Any advice or suggestions gratefully appreciated.
  9. I use the essential package for FaceTime calls. I need to be able to call home everyday due to my Mum having dementia, seeing me waving to her, even through a screen helps the carers to reassure her. The essential package allows me to do this, as well as send emails, surf the web etc. It works the majority of time in the cabin, and if there is any difficulty with connecting then a quick visit to the public areas works.
  10. For this years 65 night, the Headliners did not perform for the first couple of weeks as they were new to the ship and therefore had to practice on board first. They also performed a play one afternoon which lasted around two hours. They have I believe 7 shows so these were spread out, and one or two repeated by ‘guest request’ There was a crew talent show one afternoon, some of which were far better than the guest entertainment. Menus were on a two week rotation, maybe one dish changed during the rotation. They are marked with the day at the bottom of the menu, so you can see when the rotation starts again. There may be opportunities for learning a new skill. For example the second half of the cruise we had ukulele lessons. Always wanted to learn an instrument so I enjoyed this. The usual language classes, in this case in was Spanish or maybe Portuguese.
  11. The small print states higher prices were the 10 days preceding the 22nd November, which is tomorrow, so I assume that the deals will go live tomorrow, or Wednesday. This may also be the reason the Qr code isn’t working yet.
  12. We have been on the Iona twice as a family of four. On the first day the steward will ask what time you would like the beds out down, this is usually when you are at dinner, in the morning when your room is serviced they will put the bed away. They will leave them down if you request, or you can ask for the beds to be put up or down at anytime by calling reception. Hope this helps answer your question.
  13. Yes, we always book the cheapest inside cabin, which is usually aft, and are often upgraded to an inside on mid ship, which is technically an upgrade.
  14. It was £35 in March. It was £25 in November 21, personally I found the experience underwhelming. Maybe because there were hot tile bed hogs. Only two were working and the occupants stayed on them for the whole time reading. The hydro pool wasn’t working either, so that’s why it was £25.
