Cool! So they had a sort of sampler platter, or did you order all that separately? I've greatly enjoyed your pics along the way! Definitely makes me want to go. I love the northern scenery. My sister-in-law is on this sailing and said she greatly enjoyed Greenland. So looking at all the pics, etc. takes me right back to our Norway trip back in '19. Oh no! What FB site are you referring to? I'm sure Heidi was terribly upset. No, we had a few real good sightings of the NL on our Viking cruise back in '19. I had posted a few pics of them on this thread a few pages back. So where did the Jewel go before this Greenland cruise? I thought maybe you were on this sailing.

Great pictures. Looks beautiful up there. About what time were the NL sighted? Are there shore excursions offered in these Greenland ports? Wondering about Nuuk being that you referred to shuttle service. LOL on seeing that artisan cheese plate on the menu. On a recent RCL cruise, one night it showed up during dinner (didn't order it) and then it kept coming every day. Not sure why.

Not unusual for much sharper colors caught by the camera unless there is really good solar activity, and then the eyes also can see the brighter colors. We did Viking's Northern Lights cruise back in '19 and great onboard lecturers. One of the things they talked about is proper camera settings and so forth, as well as suggestions on downloading some good apps for mobile phone. I remember one was for long exposure pics and the other is to check the Kp index - indicating how strong a sighting is likely to be and where it is relative to one's location. I got some pretty good shots up in Norway using just my iphone. My regular 35mm and video cam were worthless. Didn't have a tripod for the phone and so a few pics are a bit shaky. Still, I didn't think I'd get as much as I did. Funny...they made an announcement during dinner and so everyone hustled out of the dining room. Probably one of the ONLY things that would take people away from their food (!) except for an emergency, and we had that too...a big one actually. Never got to finish the cruise. My eyes did not see this real bright green color. Staff also said they'd make announcements on the room tvs and so we were told to leave them on, but we found the extra light made it hard to sleep. I don't believe there were any late night sightings though. Our best sightings were right on the ship - better (for us anyway) than the (long and COLD) evening program that they took us out on. Best of luck seeing them this evening! Here's the app that I used. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/my-aurora-forecast-alerts/id1073082439 There are probably others.

Oh my! Been there and done that, not having to be winched off because of illness but due to intended evacuation of all the passengers. As it turned out, only 450 or so were evac'd by helicopter. Hope the person will be ok. BTW...happened to notice your fall trips on the Jewel. Now that so many of these northern itineraries are going out of Boston or Quebec, doing B2B (so as to return to Cape Liberty) looks like a nice option, except that for me 3 weeks starts to get a bit too long. This (Greenland) cruise is already moved to roundtrip Boston for next year.

Yep, but I'm coming to the realization that, for various reasons, there are many places that are still on a "bucket list" that I'll probably never get to. Waited too long. Have to be realistic of changing circumstances but yet more than thankful for whatever travel we've done. I'll never forget being in a shop in downtown Baltimore right after a cruise and got talking to one of the employees. He was simply in awe of our having just completed a cruise. From the conversation, it became pretty apparent that such travel was likely beyond his means, along with countless others. All of us here on CC, sharing experiences of world travel, should not take it for granted but rather feel truly grateful for having the resources, etc. to be able to do it.

I can totally relate to this and have to agree. This is what we're going to be leaning towards I suspect...especially DIY car trips. I like fly/drive also, but within the US. No interest in doing independent travel overseas.

You got that right. 😳 Same right back at you...take care.

Andy, if memory serves, wasn't this described before (probably in association with the Sky incident) - either by you or....geez...can't recall his username....like yourself a very experienced mariner. Thanks, as always, for your fine explanations.

Granted, but at the least sailing with recommended oil levels would have been a pretty easy means of very likely avoiding the entire situation. That was at least a big part of the "specifics" of the failure it would seem. But then, bright side is that there would never have been an amazing invitational cruise without the incident. My brother is still jealous of our helicopter rescue....

"technical failure"....uh-huh. As Torstein admitted during our invitational cruise, "human error", pure and simple - which in turn LED to various technical issues.

Doing well, JD. Hope the same for you! So ironic that you posted this cause I was just corresponding with a cruiser friend of mine today about our 2019 adventure and got to re-reading some of the lengthy report from back in Sept. '21. Got me thinking about it all cause we're going to (finally) use our vouchers later this month on the Mississippi! Indeed! This is what I was just telling my friend about, that the final report has not yet been made public. I think we're done with Viking for awhile after this upcoming river trip, and actually probably done with cruising for maybe a year or two. After the hectic nature of the last two years with rescheduled / rebooked trips crammed in closer together than we like, we need a time out from some of it. Looking to maybe do more in the way of car trips, probably including fly/drive, which I really enjoy. Since our daughter moved to Irvine last summer, we've not seen her since. So one of these times that'll be high up on the list to get out there for a visit. Not sure how many more 'across the pond' trips we'll be doing either. Age and a few health-related issues ever so gradually make their presence felt. We should done some real long-distance destination trips (that I've always hoped to do) shortly after retirement instead of leaving them on hold. Now, not sure that they'll happen. DW is becoming increasingly averse to long-haul flights.
