No need. They are picking up White Bay, putting it on the back of a trailer and taking it down to Botany Bay.

Well AFAIK the plan certainly isn't making that assumption - or otherwise it would have a totally different level of planning.

Happy to be proved wrong though - heck if the cruise resumes I'll try and get on an Adventure departure from White Bay myself!

How can Princess be selling Australia cruises for December? Are they expecting a miracle cure next month? I understand they want revenue but it's a very short sighted approach. I just feel they have moved over the 'optimistic' line into the unethical zone. They need to be realistic and take their customers along with them.

You do realise that the case number in Australia is as low as we can imagine in Western countries - and ScoMo (our PM) has publicly mentioned he wanted domestic borders open by Christmas, which is right at the time when cruise is about to restart.

There's also a travel bubble for NZers to come to NSW and NT now - although the reverse hasn't happened but I do believe this is largely due to the election in NZ that is right on the horizon (17 Oct IIRC).

I know this is subject to allowing the ships back but IMO there is a bigger chance that this can happen down here than up in the States - if all procedures are approved by local health team.

  3. Japan is opening up cruise to Japan-flagged ships (a few but not many).

With proper procedures in place and other negotiations it might actually happen.

Trouble is PCL from Japan needs to stop at a foreign port due to regulations (similar to the US one). The only one I bet they even will have a remote chance of docking is Taiwan. I don't believe any Mainland ports will be open to foreign cruises but am happy to be proved wrong.

Extra berths will impact on public space, theatre, lounges, dining areas. Why do these ex Princess ships get butchered when they are handed down to P and O Australia.

They always do that - means they can push down the unit prices to get the same yield and cater to more families

P&O is not really PCL level when it comes to customer experience for sure

They will not use White Bay for check in.  That is almost as implausible as Chilliburn's stupid waterslide idea and airport check in.

They can, in fact it was actively practised down in Australia until very recently - for Pacific Dawn at Hamilton.

Once a while the ship would not be able to dock at the Hamilton terminal due to wind; and would be docked at FI Grain terminal (which is just tiny little more than a shed).

Computers are transferred from FI Grain to Hamilton, luggage and pax are checked in at Hamilton and transferred to FI Grain.

I think this is one of those, I'll believe it when I see it, things.

Golden Princess was supposed to go into Singapore for a spruce and repaint (and some extra cabins?) before joining P&O this month. She's currently sitting offshore from Singapore not doing very much. But whatever they were going to do to her, I can't see it involving cutting 14m off her superstructure so she can fit under the bridge.

    I know.

Read somewhere on this forum she was suppoed to add 600 beds.

Guess now with cruising not restarting till at least mid-Dec there's time for it - not sure if Golden has had sailed the normal LAX-SIN repo would the ship have reached Singapore by now or not?

How many ships will be left, which can actually use White Elephant Bay?

    P&O

    Pacific Explorer - yes

    Pacific Adventure - no

    Pacific Encounter - no

** Are P&O really down to just 3 ships, with Dawn & Aria having been sold to CMV just before they went belly-up?

    Princess

    Coral Princess - no

    Sapphire Princess - no

    Emerald Princess - no

    Royal Princess - no

    HAL

    MS Oosterdam - yes

As far as I can tell, there are only two ships (regularly based in Australia) capable of operating from White Elephant Bay - Pacific Explorer and MS Oosterdam.  Looking at Pacific Explorer's cruise schedule, I can see cruises departing from Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Fremantle - everywhere except Sydney.  Oosterdam is only based here for a few months of the year.

Time to shut this White Elephant down, once and for all.

** EDIT - Coral Princess is a no.  She's 62m tall, height under the Coathanger is 49m.

Pacific Adventure was scheduled to dock multiple times at White Bay between Oct 2020 and Jan 2021 so they must have figured out a way to let it through the Harbour Bridge. Yes you got this right as I was surprised when I saw this as well (when it sailed as Golden Princess it never docked at WB AFAIK).

Port Authority NSW used to have a detailed listing on their website but this apparently is taken down due to the current climate.

  8. So.... P&O has finally pulled the plug on Pacific Dawn and announced her early departure.

No word on Aria as of yet.

In addition, P&O Cruises Australia has announced that Pacific Dawn will leave the fleet in the next few months.

This means that the Pacific Dawn departures from the 17 December 2020 to 11 February 2021 are affected.

She was due to sail out of Melbourne and all sailings are no longer available online.

I think Astro Ocean operates exclusive out of China....and Peace Boat is an Educational sea going network..! They currently operate Ocean Dream (Ex  Carnival Tropicale)

Yep Astro Ocean is a Chinese cruise line. They currently have Piano Land which was Oriana for P&O UK.

@snoozecrooze Star Princess will not sail again for Princess. She will go into cold layup until she is refit for P&O Australia and enters service as Pacific Encounter for them.  She was originally planned to enter service for P&O in late November 2021.  The timing will be dependent on when/if the Pacific Explorer (former Dawn Princess) is sold, or if she stays in the fleet a bit longer.

Are they now trying to kill Pacific Explorer too?

Jeez. Not liking that movement from me. I would rather have three choices of ships like what we had (in fact we had 4 during the best times)

How does Perth fall short in being able to visit and do embarkation ?

Perth has a single level terminal. God forbid it turning an Oasis class ship.

Sydney can handle it as long as it can make its way to OPT - but if you're trying to debark and embark 6k+ people it's going to take up a whole day (something like 0600-2200ish at the very least). Currently the two biggest ships OPT handles - Majestic and Ovation - takes to about 1845 to depart (granted there was a ferry curfew between 1700 and 1845).

In reality I suspect the only terminal together with berth facilities that can handle Oasis class ship is Brisbane. No way in hell can Melbourne do that - heck Ovation can't make it in due to the depth and width of the ship (and the passage in Port Philip Bay is narrow and shallow due to rocks).
