  1. Hi Anni,

[*]To walk along the lake, pedestrian street, the Schwerin Cathedral to arrive at the Tourist Info Center/Town Hall to take the daily guided walking tour from 11:00 to 12:30 for € 5.50 per person.

    Thanks in advance.

Jolly, unless something has changed, the walking tour is in German. Sprechen ze Deutsch?

If in English we would be interested.Have you heard it is in English?

  2. Dear Anni, based on your good advice I have planned the following from Warnemunde:

Train trip to Schwerin & Wismar using Mecklenburg Lander ticket.

Warnemunde -> Rostock Hbf 8:17-8:37 or 8:32-8:52, Depart Rostock Hbf. 9:07 (toward Hamburg), Arrive Schwerin Hbf. 10:03, Depart Schwerin Hbf. 13:46 (or 14:46) Arrive Wismar 14:21 (15:16), Depart Wismar 16:42, Arrive Rostock Hbf 17:51. Thought is go to castle in Schwerin then quick snack & on to Wismar.

I am thinking are we trying to do too much and do either Schwerin OR Wismar? We are in 60s/70s, active & have travelled on German trains in the past. Main focus in Schwerin is the castle & in Wismar, the churches & architecture. Ship in port until 2200.

Like to get your thoughts on if we are trying to do too much in one day. We realize we will be tired by the end of the day but would like to do both towns if feasible.

Thanks in advance for your thoughtful reply.

  3. Thanks to Anni's help we plan to do BOTH Schwerin & Wismar on a long port day.

Baroque & medieval on same day. Seems straight forward using trains. Here is our plan. Anni maybe you can comment on its feasibility.

Depart Rostock Hbf. 9:07, Arrive Schwerin Hbf. 10:03

Depart Schwerin Hbf. 13:46 (or 14:46) Arrive Wismar 14:21 (15:16), Depart Wismar 16:42, Arrive Rostock Hbf 17:51.

This leaves ~3.5 or 4.5 hours in Schwerin and ~2.3 or 1.3 hours in Wismar.

Alternate if tired is to return from Schwerin, Depart Schwerin Hbf. 15:53, 17:53 Arrive Rostock Hbf. 16:51,18:51.

Quick lunch in Schwerin. Full day, I know.

  4. Once you are in downtown Copenhagen its best seen on foot.

A single trip from the airport and Hilton cost 36 kroner

A 24 hour City Pass cost 80 kroner.

A 72 hour city pass cost 200 kroner.

So if you just use it to and from downtown it will only be 8 kroner (1,5 USD) to buy the 24 hour City Pass and you will have the added flexibility of just walk into a harbour bus (cheap alternative to canal tours) bus, metro or train without thinking about bying a ticket.

But remember that the city pass is only for transportation, the card with entrances to tourists sights and museums is the Copenhagen Card.

Plan to use 24 hour City pass since it will be less than 24 hours we are in Copenhagen before boarding.

What is "a harbour bus (cheap alternative to canal tours)"?? We had planned a canal tour but this sounds interesting.

  5. Anni, we are in Warnemunde on a Sunday & I understand we could go earlier than the 9:07 since not a weekday (using Lander billet). Are there better trains, earlier, faster trains since it a weekend?

Assume it will be more crowded but other than that any other advantages/disadvantages with being a Sunday. If like in USA, lunch is higher priced in most places on Sunday. Any recommend for Lunch in Schwerin for traditional German? I've found Cafe Prag & Altstadtbrauhaus. Any comment on those? We may be in a hurry with the full day so maybe a bratwurst will have to do.

    Thanks for your great service.

  6. Yes there are at least these two different companies providing hop on hop off buses:

Strömma's Open Top Tours uses green buses

Citytour's Red Buses uses red buses.

Both companies have the tour maps on the website and seem to swing by cruise ships if those are in port. Both companies charge 25 euros and cover pretty much the same sights. Based on the maps on the website the route is a little different and Open Top Tours visits Senate Square twice during the tour making their route in effect two small loops whereas the Red Buses one is a single larger loop.

Thanks Jonza. Apparently both go by Henasaari when ship in port. Any comment which is preferred red or green? More busses, etc.

  7. It appears we may only have time for one of the above prior to boarding ship. Given that we want to see the changing of the guard at Amelienborg, which would you suggest?

I know there is a discount ticket for both but not sure we have time for both. About how long would each take?

    Thanks for your great help.

  8. We are using SPB tours but haven't booked it. Plan to decide in "real time" whether to do depending how tired we are. May miss if we haven't prebooked but that is chance we take. Our day tour doesn't include a canal tour so we wouldn't be doing it twice if we decide to do it.

I suggest you use who you book the day tours with.

  9. Same here. Actually St. Petersburg seems better to do on a land trip with a visa - it just needs more time. They could throw in Latvia and Gdansk on my cruise and I'd be ok with it.

Agree BUT 2 more sea days would not be acceptable. Don't think Putin will back down & he will try to subvert new Ukrainian govt. Will probably succeed. See how quickly the new navy chief defected,

  10. Another option to taking the canal boat tour during the day, is to take the night time fun tour which includes a canal tour plus entertainment plus vodka. Since it only gets dark around midnight during the summer months you will see all. If you have been watching the Olympics from Sochi there have been human interest store about the Russian Vodka. Vodka is an important element of Russian culture.

A word about meals, during the SPB tour you will stop for meals but it won't be a place that takes much time, and you will pay for your meal yourself. I rather like that choice. Your guide will help you exchange a few dollars for rubles. If I wanted a nice Russian meal, I would arrange to be taken to a restaurant for dinner after the tour. There are many options available when you are there overnight.

Yes, that is what we are planning to do. The highlights tour followed by the evening vodka/canal tour. We chose SPB because we wanted to eat lunch at the Stolle pie shop & they were the only ones we found who had it on their group tour itinerary. Also like choosing what to eat.
