Thanks for all your responses. Many good suggestions. One question not yet answered is if train is booked directly with the Flam Railway, how long is the stop at the top? Is there time to get off for a few minutes to get a cup of coffee and use the facilities?

i think I would enjoy the Celebrity excursion, but not at their price.

I believe the turnarounf time is about one hour.  We booked our own tickets a few years ago and had zero issues with the trip and especially enjoyed bypassing the cruise ship crowd.

With the current unrest in Haiti, how does everyone feel about Jamaica?  While I realize they are separate countries and islands, they are separated by just a short boat/plane ride away.  I have a cruise on Odyssey of the Seas in 2 weeks that I'm getting uncomfortable with.  Thanks for any feedback.

It's about 500 km from Port au Prince to the island of Jamaica.  I'd say the chances of an overflow of the problems in Haiti to Jamaica by boat or air are negligible.

  3. In case you have not heard, there was an unfortunate incident on NS earlier today.  Here is a press release from HAL.  No word whether upcoming schedule will be effected.

THIS IS AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM HOLLAND AMERICA LINE REGARDING THE EVENTS TODAY ON THE NIEUW AMSTERDAM.

We regret to share that while calling at Half Moon Cay, The Bahamas, there was an incident in an engineering space on board Nieuw Amsterdam, which sadly resulted in the death of two crew members.

The appropriate authorities were notified, and the cause of the incident is currently being investigated.

All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with our team members’ families at this difficult time. The safety, security and welfare of all guests and crew are the company’s absolute priority. We are offering counseling services to team members who may have been affected by the incident.

@terrydtx I have booked my first HAL cruise for K'dam next February.  Have you ever done COmon that ship and what would be your views on investing in the experience?  I have a VD category cabin, what might I expect for annupgrade, if available?

Is a higher percentage of DSC retained by the company to offset non crew operating costs? Put another way, does NCL require it's passengers to pay a higher percentage of crew base salary, by shifting that cost to the customer?

This would be my guess.  Of course, we'll never know but need grist for the service charge mill!

This is off topic from the original question, but I believe you are incorrect.  Boarding time and check-in time are synonymous and used interchangeably in cruise language.  After you "check in" on the website or app, you're assigned an "arrival time", aka boarding time, which shows up in the app and on the website.  Boarding/arrival is always a set time.

Really!  If my check-in time (or arrival at the check-in area time) is 1130, why am I not already onboard?  In fact, I may actually have to sit around for a period of time for no apparent (at least to me) reason.

Oh great to know!!  We'll go for 12:30 - 1ish.  Thanks:)

Don't forget to pack a selection of shorts, t-shirts and sandals for dining and large clips to secure a towel to a pool-side lounger early in the morning before heading off to a leisurely breakfast; skip the handwash station... totally unnecessary.

I will get Airalo for Europe. My grandson suggested leaving my regular sim card at home  and I am leaning towards this . I wonder if my phone is not in airplane mode near a port with it only pick up the tower signal for land for Airalo or will it get the ship signal ( which I don't want!)

If you get an esim you don't have to remove your sim card.  If you decide to remove your sim, that will certainly preclude any unexpected roaming charges.  Leaving your sim at home though is probably not a good idea; you may want to use your phone before you leave Canada and when you get back and you may wish to make phone calls while away if something important/urgent comes up.

Can you bring on a pack of coke etc if you purchase it from a supermarket when you are in port or can you just bring it on the day you embark.

    Thanks

    Embarkation day only.

My understanding is that Celebrity prohibits bringing soft drinks onboard , in fact I think that's ture throughout the industry. If you are certain that the policy is different, pls let me know. We're Coke junkies and $4+ / can is highway robbery....

You can bring on cans of soda; you mneed to carry them onboard yourself.

@akamaiguy I have been searching high and low for the spreadsheet you made to be printed out of all the decks on the Sun Princess (both sides of ship).  I’m sorry to post here but I can’t figure out how to use Cruise Critic and contact you any other way 😂 you originally posted it on the Sun Princess thread that has now been closed down and the spreadsheet attachment is saying unavailable?  Would you please post again?

    Is this helpful?
