Recent cruisers: how much did you get exchanging CAD to CUC?

I’ve heard that you get .78 CUC for 1 CAD. But US gets .87. However, I get more CAD per USD which I guess is what, in theory, makes it a bit better to exchange to CAD. I’m not a money nor math person......so confusing!

We just returned from Havana last week and received 150 CUC for 200 CAD, so .78 and a 3% fee.

So you actually got less than if you had exchanged USD directly? $200 USD - 13% = $174, but $200 CAD(@.78) - 3% = 151

WOW!!!! Everyone always says that you come out a bit ahead with the CAD. Gotta decide what to do.

If you were to exchange your $200 USD for CAD you would have somewhere around $250 (guessing), so comparing $200 USD to $200 CAD is pointless.

  • 2 weeks later...

Prior to our cruise, at a USA Bank, I purchased CAD and exchanged them for CUC at the Havana Cruise Terminal on May 9th.

$417.57 USD => $500 CAD => 380.20 CUC

I later exchanged USD to CUC at the Cienfuegos Cruise Terminal on May 15th.

$100.00 USD => 86.85 CUC

At the conclusion of the Cuba segment of the cruise, I exchanged CUC to USD at the Santiago de Cuba Cruise Terminal on May 16th.

33.90 CUC => $31.00 USD

As I understand the exchange 'system', had I initially exchanged USD to CUC in Havana the result would have been

$417.57 => 363.28 CUC
