CAD Currency - On Board Credit?

Our travel agent told us that any unused obc will be refunded on our credit card. Are you saying they mail a cheque for unused obc? I thought it was something done automatically?

I am having a heck of a time getting my money back from NCL! Its not a huge amount, but the amount of time I have spent trying to get it is incredible! I am currently on hold for the 3 time with their post-cruise relations (and have been in the queue now for 45 mins). I have also written 4 emails to NCL (I have case numbers), but they have never responded.

I had a $70 or so balance left on the OBC I had bought in advance when disembarking. They told me that it would be refunded to the CC after the cruise. It was not, so I called customer relations (the 1st time) they said it would provided in 4 weeks. Then I waited 4 weeks and called/emailed again. They said in 6 weeks. It has now been 8 weeks since we arrived back and I have tried getting in touch with them many times (my TC tried as well, but since I purchased it myself on the NCL website they would not provide her with any info).

So - I would suggest you insist on any refunds before leaving the ship. I am really really disappointed with their post-cruise service (especially since we have 2 future cruises already booked)!!!

This is exactly why I went to the casino and was okay with paying the 3% convenience charge and withdrew the last of my onboard credit that I pre-purchased before cruising to get the last of my money (which was $280.00) instead of waiting for however long it would take to get my refund by cheque after the cruise was over. In the end my US charge card had a balance of less that $60.00 on it when I arrived home at which time I promptly paid the outstanding balance. I also could have gone to guest services the last night of the cruise and paid it off with my cash I hand, but just as easy to do it once I was back home.

Thanks for the info. Do you know if you could have cashed it out at the Casino? I am hearing so many conflicting reports on this and would like to hear first hand if this is still an option!

I was told by casino staff that minimum withdrawl is $100. I tried cashing out $55.

If you have $50.00 or less you can cash this out at the front desk. I would think they would let you also cash out if you had $55.00 (since that's close and you can't obviously go to the casino to get it). Also, I believe at the front desk there is no 3% convenience charge.

I tried that but they wouldn't so I just spent it in the shops.

Will be on the Getaway in 14 days! Crazy excited! Making last minute decisions on whether or not to try to prepurchase OBC and then cash out at the casino for cash to use on excursions, etc. Has anyone in the past couple weeks cashed out at the casino on the Getaway? Additionally, we have $300 non-refundable OBC from NCL. Can we cash this out as well for casino play?

You cannot cash out non-refundable OBC from NCL. If anything, you may have to insert your room card in the actual slot machine and "play with your OBC" that way. Not sure though. Maybe someone else can confirm this or in any event contact NCL directly for confirmation.

I phoned NCL yesterday and spoke with someone at Casino reservations and they said you could cash out OBC for a 3% fee..great..what I wanted to hear!

Today I phoned back as I wanted to purchase $150 OBC for a gift for someone else. I asked to confirm exchange rate and it would have cost me $55 more then buying online because they booked later at a different exchange rate.

So I asked if I could buy it for myself online and then cash it out at casino. I was told no, you cant do this. I said they wanted the money for casino (it was a birthday gift) He said if you have any money on your sail and sign card they will take it from that not give you cash.

So confused TA said no..NCL said no but Casino said yes!

Has anyone done this recently?

When you go to the casino you give them your sail and sign card and that is how you withdraw funds. The OBC you purchased is all on your sail and sign card. The only money you can not withdraw from the casino is the money you get from your TA or a credit from the cruise line itself. We have done this many times. Being Canadian this is how we get our spending money, buying OBC before we go at a cheaper rate than the bank. Luckily we purchased our cruise a long time ago so we got it for 1.11. Even at the rates they are giving today through NCL, it may seem a lot but it's still better than you would get at the bank.

Have any of you Canadians had the experience of having all but $1000 of the cabins OBC refunded? I read someone here had that happen but I am not seeing it as consistent. We have $3000 already for our upcoming Epic cruise. I am hoping that they leave me alone. I was planning on buying more but I don't want to get greedy and be flagged by NCL:)

Just got back from the Escape and had no problem getting cash from our onboard credit. Thanks for all the advice!

How long did it take in order to see credit on your account? Was it there when you got on board or did it take a couple days to show up?? Also. Was there a limit that they would allow you to take out per day?

Thanks for any info

I think the credit showed up on our account as soon as we purchased it. We bought 10 $100 credit certificates, they were in our room waiting for us but we just took our sail and sign card down to casino cashier following day to see if we needed to bring certificates but they just took it right off our s&s card minus 3%. We took $600 first day and $400 a few days later

We didn't try to get any out at the casino as they gave us a real hard time last year. This year we were on Getaway and any of the leftover OBC that we had purchased was refunded to us in the form of a US$ cheque which was fine with us. We have an US$ bank account so just deposited into that account.

We went on a POA cruise in November of 2015 and booked with a Canadian travel zoo deal. The rate was 1.07% and I purchased $700us obc for $749cdn to cover expenses and a future cruise credit. No casino on the POA so I had to wait for a refund. I bought 2x $250us credits and they charged only $250us for both because they were offering 50% onboard credit. I had originally expected to be charged $500 and then get $250 obc put on my account. The cruise next consultant explained it to me before hand and I should of bought 2 more.

She wrote on each cruise next certificate that the credit was $250us or $330cdn The exchange rate had soared between the time of booking and the cruise itself.

I used the $330cdn for my Canada at par Spirit cruise next month.

So those of you who are locked in at less than 1.20 I suggest you buy a couple of cruise next certificates if you hope to cruise NCL again. They will refund them if you don't use them before it's expiration. I think the refund would be for half as that's what you paid. At 1.11, I would buy 4

$100 in USD OBC will cost approximately $130 CDN now... Not worth the hassle

I would do a mock booking of obc to see what rate is tied to your account. I bought mine for 1.07 when the bank rate was at 1.20. When I sailed the rate was 1.30+

There's no casino on the POA so I only bought what I could use.
