Nevertheless there are various types of tickets which are not valid for all trains.
An anytime single Southampton Waterloo will cost you about £40.

A suggestion: Ask the taxi driver to drop you on the 'London' side of the station. You can then walk from the station directly to the platform with out having to cross over using the stairs, and lifts (one of which has often been out of order). You will save time and steps, and if you have luggage, heavy lifting.
