Has anyone done a food tour in Paris?

Can you recommend one to take or avoid? Would love to hear your experiences as there seem to be quite a few choices.

I have in 2014 and had a great time. We walked around and picked up baguettes, cheese, chocolate, cold meats then walked to a small wine store and sampled the goodies. We also got t sample a few things on the way. This was in the St Germaine area and we went with Paris By Mouth. They have food tours for various areas.

One thing we really loved in Paris and France was the butter. Especially the one with Flora De Sal....the little salt crystals that just make the bread and butter sing a yummy song.

Out of interest I had a look at what was on offer. I nearly fell off my seat when I saw the prices.

For what they are charging per person you could buy an awful lot of wine and food in a specialist shop or supermarket. Outrageous.

This past October I did two, one from Paris by Mouth, which was very good, and one by La Cuisine Paris, which was even better. The food is quite similar no matter where you go in Paris, so the difference is in the neighborhood history and the guides. I highly recommend La Cuisine Paris - I heard from some people on the tour that their cooking classes are wonderful too - unfortunately I wasn’t able to fit that into my schedule. I’d recommend booking early since their tours are quite small and fill up quickly.

You don’t say how long you are in Paris, is it a port visit or a pre/post cruise Paris visit with a bit of extra time? That might be a variable as to amount of time/money spent, but then....it’s Paris, French food.

And so, given the Paris by Mouth tour is 110€ per person, I’m going all in suggesting Arpège by Alain Passard (Michelin 3 Star) for The Gardener’s Lunch at 175€ per person. Why not sit, enjoy a world class meal in a TRUE farm to table restaurant- nothing will be served that they did not grow on their own organic farm. For not much more than these food tours in various quartiers of the Left Bank you’ll be near the Eiffel Tower, Invalides, d’Orsay, for a multi course lunch that varies every single day. Oh, and monsieur Passard gives most of the credit for his cooking passion to his grandmother. You can see him, Arpège, the farm (and surprisingly no yelling in the kitchen “oui chef!) on. Otherwise, don’t pay anyone to do a food tour, just research Paris shops/quartiers/markets and hit some places on your way through the city, you’ll do just fine. There’s a shop just for mustards. I never seem to get out of the chocolatiers and patisseries but, ooooh. But having a fine French meal in Paris can be an unforgettable experience for a foodie - doing lunch keeps it “sort of” attainable as a splurge (Veg dinner menu 320€; Fish/Veg 390€)

(Prior to my first ever visit to Paris in the 90s, my then grad professor only ever talked about Arpège, Fauchon and Bernachon chocolate in Lyon. Arpège only had two stars then but he wasn’t wrong about any of the tips, least of all the chocolate!)
