For the ambitious, I've walked there and back to the ship with no problems. I was alone but others walking ahead of me, plus I walked back with a couple who asked if I wanted to walk with them. It was nice of them to ask, I'm older, travel alone, appreciated the gesture and company! :)

Really depends on which terminal you are docking just how close you are. However all cruise terminals are fairly easy and safe access to West Quay. Unless the transfer is free and no queue, I would personally walk. You may be at the Ocean Cruise Terminal which is around a 20 minute walk and about 1 mile.
