Hi all- We are considering the Star to Hawaii on Dec. 20th, 2013. What have your experiences been with how calm the seas are, or not(!!!) during this time of year?? Would love to do this trip, but am a bit nervous about the motion of the ocean!! Thanks for your feedback- Susie

The Pacific is rough a few days off the coast of California. We just returned from the

Golden over Christmas. The seas are not smooth as a general rule. The weather was

ok, rain and wind and some sun. You are not going to Hawaii at Christmas for the

good weather.

Hi Susie S. The seas will be the least of your worries. The biggest problem this time of year is unruly teenagers and out of control kids. Parents seem to think that being on a ship absolves them of all responsibility for their offspring and prop up the bar for the duration. Have fun.

We were on a non-cruise visit to the Big Island this past holiday period. There was abundant sunshine on most of the island, though it rained/drizzled over in Volcanoes National Park. The Big Island has a dry side (Kona) and wet side (Hilo). The weather only stopped us from doing one thing - we had already hiked one day in the drizzle in VNP and skipped another hike later in our visit because we didn't want another wet hike.

We went out snorkeling on the Kona side several times and had fine conditions (calm). We went out in a lava boat on the southeast side, and had 4-6 foot swells, which we were told was average roughness.

Supposedly, high surf hit Maui and the other more western islands during our visit.

Hi There - We were just on the POA over the New year. Although We had a great time, I don't think I would personally go back again at this time of year. We had rain in Kauai (But it made for GREAT waterfalls!) and In Maui, overcast in Kona. Temps were around 75 daily but the worst was the wind. Gusts of 30-50mph made even sunny days feel chilly, being on the water impossible, and just not pleasant to walk around outside. Depending on what activities you like to do it might make or break your trip. Lots of people complaining about water activities on small boats and getting sick from the roughnes of the waves. The ship itself had some rough seas a few of the nights as well. We previously sailed over Thanksgiving and had no roughness at all. If you are going to mainly shop and do land-based tours that are not weather dependant I think it would be fine...
