gonesalsa, for the cost of a phone call to Florence, and no payment required for your tickets until you arrive ... I would make a reservation. That way you know you'll be able to get in without waiting. When you get there, if you see that the line for those without reservations is short, you could go in that line, don't mention your reservation, and you'll simply pay the entrance fee (and not the 4 euro booking fee). But if there is a line, and you have a reservation, it will be worth the 4 euros each to not have to stand in a long line. Seeing the original statue of David is awesome!

p.s. meant to add...since it looks like you're going to be there pre or post cruise, if you are there for a couple of days and don't want to make a reservation, the advice in R. Steves' article (in the link that I posted above) might be of help.
