How old to cruise?

Recommended Posts

My daughter turns 18 in April 2005, & graduates from school in May 2005. She wants to go on a cruise with 5 other friends either the last week of may or the first week on June in 2005. All her friends are 18 also. I've checked with carnival and there must be a person at least 25 in the room.

Is there any cruise lines that let 18 year olds cruise by them selves?

Also because of their budgets, and the fact of all living in Az. they need to leave from the west coast, Los Angeles, San Diego, etc.

My thinking was a 4-7 day Mexican Rivera cruise.

Someone please say there is a cruise line that would accomodate them.

Royal Caribbean - maybe.

Expect plenty of respsonses questioning the wisdom of turning 6 adolescents loose on a floating cocktail lounge traveling to Mexico. I think everyone who has cruised has a horror story of "good" teens gone bad during a cruise. Trust me, girls are just as willing to put themselves in situations that they might not be able to get out of as the boys - maybe more so.

Sea Princess, Royal Princess, Grand Princess (3X), Caribbean Princess, Golden Princess

Not Royal Caribbean. They too have the same rule that Carnival has with sailing under 21. Im not too sure about Disney. (They are moving their ship to the west coast next year to celebrate an anniversary for DisneyLand.

Check out Norweign and Princess. The kids will all have to be 18 on the date of sailing. If one is 17 they cant go.

Check out Princess. But warn them that they can be kicked off for being trouble. I seen two young men kicked off on one of my dawn trips. One was 19 the other 21. Both got drunk on board and made trouble. They were put a shore and had to pay fines because of getting kicked off. This was in St Thomas. They had to pay for their own transport back.

Disney and Princess (and Windjammer) are the only cruise lines that will allow 18-year olds to book independently. And, they must all be 18 at the time of sailing. Both are among the higher-priced mass-market lines, so it won't be cheap. They can go to an all-inclusive resort in Mexico by themselves if they are all 18. You might get a better deal that way, because the air, tips, all food, and all drinks would be included, whereas on a ship, you'll be paying extra for drinks, tips, excursions, and air. Disney, Princess, and Windjammer all do 7-night cruises. (A four-day cruise only goes to Catalina and Ensenada, Mexico. yuk) There are some very good, reasonable all-inclusives in Puerto Vallarta. Try calling Apple Vacations at 1-800-365-2775. (Or a local travel agent) They do a lot of all-inclusive package deals from the West Coast. When my daughter graduated from high school, I took her and two of her friends to a great A/I in Puerto Vallarta - the Nuevo Diamond Allegro. Very nice moderately priced resort, great beach, great pool, and they had a blast! There are some fun nightclubs around that area, too. We flew out of SFO. Good luck!

Can the 18 year olds drink on Princess or Disney? I thought the drinking age on those ships were 21.

AFAIK, The only line where 18 yr olds can drink on the ship, is Royal Caribbean, and then... It is only beer and wine. You still have to be 21 for *hard* liquor. 18 yr olds CAN, however, drink legally in Mexico...

You may also check into Norwegian. They used to let under 21s travel without a 25 year old. I hope this helps!

I thought all cruise lines, you must be 21 to sail without parents. I do know that you must show proof of age (21) before they can buy a mix drink.
And if they cause any problems onboard the ship, they will be put off at the next port of call!! Then they will have to find there own way home from there.

After reading these posts--I had an awful thought about my upcoming trip June 19th. I am taking my 18 yo grand daughter with me. She has a passport (what a job getting that) but will there be any questioning because she is not my daughter and not the same name? Her mother is aware of the trip even though my granddaughter lives with me.

Crafty: Please post your question on Princess as those people there can surely help you.
Having sailed only on Royal and Carnival I know you would need a notarized letter from your grand daughters family that states they know you are taking her on a trip. Also a notarized medical release form stating you can give permission for medical care. (I dont know if these rules apply since she is 18. (but better safe then sorry)

Actually, I was so concerned that I called my agent. The rule is that 18 is old enough to go anywhere in the world by themselves --no note needed, but not old enough to book a cruise. Someone older than 21 must accompany them. At least this is the rule that I was told regarding the Princess lines.

crafty: I am so glad you got that ironed out. Thats what I thought==- 18 is old enough to cruise without documentation. Thanks for updating.

Crafty - Princess has allowed 18-year olds to book independently! At least, they used to! I wonder if they've changed?? Here's their number if you want to call them: 1-800-421-0522. Actually, I just got off the phone with Princess. You will not need a notarized letter, but you might want to bring one anyway, giving you permission to seek medical treatment. Also - YES! 18-year olds CAN book independently, and do not need anyone 21 or over in the cabin with them. Have a great cruise!
