Report - Crowne Plaza Hotel San Pedro by CJW

Recommended Posts

Alright, since there seems to be so many questions about this hotel...

I dug up some pictures, and got new info, so thought I would do an "Official" report...

Who is this hotel good for?

Cruisers leaving from either San Pedro or Long Beach, as I have found that they will give you the same price for their "Park and Sail" package and "Fly and Sail" package regardless of which port your cruise is based.

People who don't want to drive, and want some kind of downtown area, that is currently being "gentrified". Some restaurants and sights within walking distance.

Now that they have their "Fly and Sail" package (which is not technically their own hotel shuttle picking you up from LAX, but sub-contracted with Primetime); but they are really gearing their hotel to cruisers from LAX to both ports.

East side/West side...

If you ask for or get a room on the East (facing the port) side, you get this:

Vincent Thomas Bridge, and probably your ship near that blue-ish "dome-y" thing on the left...

If you ask for or get a room on the West (facing the ocean) side, you get this:

and this down to the pool:

Pros or Cons, depending on your viewpoint and what you are looking for...

This is an old part of Los Angeles that is currently being renovated or "gentrified", so it is basically a small quaint downtown area near the port.

The buildings around are from the 1930s and 1940s, (and that is why they use this area a lot for filming locations, which I'll give the link to my "tour" after this), so don't expect brand spanking new area.

It's very downtown and industrial, so several restaurants and sights in easy walking distance.

The Green Onion Mexican restaurant is on the corner,

Ante's Croatian/American (I like it) restaurant one block west.

Acapulco is down near the pier...

Grinder's is basically a "Denny's" type place a block down and east.

Lot's of beautiful "California" scenery around the area, not so much.

A hotel that really tries to cater to cruisers from both ports, absolutely!

And here's my "tour" - most of the end is right within walking distance of the hotel...

A couple more things...

If it makes any difference or is important to you, it is one of those hotel building styles where the windows don't open much (if at all) just a little bit to let some air in...

This is bad for people who need lots of "fresh air" or get "claustrophobic".

This is good for people with kids who want to be aware of the safety issues on that on the high floors (which is why they have it that way)...

Then, currently (as I know that the prices will change next year)...

"Park and Sail" package includes:

Deluxe overnight accomodations for two

Bottle of California wine

Buffet breakfast

Parking for the length of your cruise

Shuttle to and from cruise ship

(and according to the manager and concierge there is no price difference if it is from the San Pedro port or the Long Beach port - for Carnival)...

currently approximately $169 (with additional taxes or whatever)

"Fly and Sail" package includes:

Deluxe overnight accomodations for two

Bottle of California wine

Buffet breakfast

Shuttle to and from cruise ship

and

Round trip airport transfers (LAX)

currently approximately $219 (with additional taxes or whatever)...

Things to know...

The shuttles to and from the ports/ships are the hotel's personal shuttles.

(Don't quote me on this, as I'm just going off memory on this point)

There are at least 4 (if not 5) times that they have a "sign up sheet" with the concierge on what time and shuttle you want...

Something like 10 AM, 11 AM, 12:30 PM and 2 PM - very approximating from memory here...;)

Also, the shuttle for the "Fly and Sail" package is their sub-contracting PrimeTime shuttle. So, they'll arrange the PrimeTime Shuttle for you to and from the LAX airport, so you'd have to check if it's better price to get your own shuttle to and from LAX for the $50 extra...

I hope this all helps...

I'll do a report on Doubletree San Pedro later, and attach a link here, so that people can compare and contrast.

So here's the link to my Doubletree San Pedro report for those of you looking to compare other options leaving from that port:

Then for anyone leaving from Long Beach for Carnival or whatever, here is a link to my report on The Coast Hotel for comparison...

All good and pros and cons for different reasons, depending on what you are looking for...

That "blue-ish dome-y" thing is called a tent. :) But you are correct, that tent is in the parking area for cruise ships. I believe it is used for check out/in when three ships are in the port.

HOW FAR IS IT TO WALK TO THE EATING PLACES ALONG THE WATER?

is it ports of call area?

From where? The cruise ship dock?

Yes, it is called Ports of Call.

I have never walked it. There is a train/trolly that goes from the dock to Sixth Street (right next to the Acapulco Restaurant) or the next stop (south bound) is the Ports of Call area. This train costs $1.00 per day (not per trip - per day). So I alway take the train ...

Oh look, here it come now ...

This photo shows two of the stops ...

And this photo shows the train and the Acapulco Restaurant ...

The Sixth Street station is just to the right of the above photo.

Thanks for all of the Crowne Plaza information. Do you know if there is a store within walking distance of the hotel where we can buy soda?

Thanks

There is a liquor store a few blocks (less than half a mile) up 6th street near Gaffey (and a 7-11 convenience store further east of that)...

Then there is a specialty wine/liquor store also about half a mile walking on 7th street.

I don't have the names offhand.

Does the Crowne Plaza pick you up at the airport?

If not how much will a taxi cost me?

Also how far is the Queen Mary from the Crowne Plaza.....? taxi fare?

How

No, but they will take you to the cruise ship. I've read on the boards that a taxi will be 40-50 bucks. Or there is the shuttle services that charge about 17 or so each way.

We are doing the sail and fly which includes, shuttle from airport to hotel, shuttle to cruise ship, cocktail, room, breakfast and shuttle from cruise port to airport. Wasn't cheap but it was what we needed all in one package.

Don't know on the QM ?

Check supershuttle.com. They charge $17per/person one way from LAX to San Pedro and will take you to your hotel.
