Dawn Refurbishment?

I believe that the last refurb was in 2005. They did go into dry dock in 2007 for Azipod repairs and some refurb was done during that period, but not a major one. The concensus on CC seems to be that the next planned dry dock is early spring, 2010 as it switches from NYC to Miami.

Thanks for your reply on the Dawn. How do people feel about the Dawn? I was on her in 2004 and 2005. How is she holding up? Considering the Dawn to Bermuda in June 2010. Ruled out the Spirit, but remain at present booked on HAL Veendam. I think I am looking to be persuaded to do the Dawn-especially since she has more to offer. Thank you.

Did you mean Miami to NYC? I thought she was going to be in NY for the summer, or has that changed?

We were just on the Dawn this past August. It was our fourth cruise on the Dawn. The Dawn is still in GREAT SHAPE.....!!! icon14.gificon14.gif

The Dawn is our FAVORITE ship and I have us booked on our FIFTH Dawn cruise for next August......!!! :D

About the Veendam, if my DH and I were just going on a cruise I would have picked the Veendam. Because we LOVE small ships, we LOVE Holland America and the Veendam goes through the Saint Georges Cut and it is in Bermuda an extra day. sHa_okay.gif

But, we are traveling with our DD and she ONLY LIKES the Dawn and the cabin we always get on the Dawn.

So, the Dawn it is. :)

The ship was in pretty good shape, but I think they need to pick it up on the general maintenance a bit. I only saw them working on the ship once. In St. John they were painting by the waterline and they replaced or re-glued some carpeting on the forward staircase. Quite a bit of the wooden railings on the outside top decks really needed to be sanded and new varnish applied.

I know they put down new carpeting in some areas on it's return trip from Miami In May. Did the CTN and I spilled my drink on the casino's new carpet and felt really bad to the point I wiped it up myself!

I thought the ship was in great shape. I didn't notice any wear and tear but then again, I wasn't looking for it.

I also like the size of th ship. Not ginormous but not too small. At least that is my opinion.

Oh, and look! According to my Coutdown Clock, I can inspect her for you next week:D.

Have a GREAT cruise! (I know you will)

Jackie

She'll be waiting for you with that big smile!!!

Your concensus is incorrect. The Dawn will be refurbished in October/November 2010 after the Bermuda season.

Thanks to all for the info. Still undecided over whether to do the Dawn (which would be a balcony room) or the HAL Veendam (which costs more and only allows me an oceanview room). My main concern is the 2 ships. My daughter, who is 13, prefers a bigger ship; I would prefer to try the Veendam-especially because the itinerary is better (4 days compared to 3 on the Dawn). Also, since I am a Gold Latitudes member with NCL, I think maybe the few perks are worth sailing with them. Is a balcony worth an extra day in Bermuda and being able to dock in Hamilton and St. George's? It is really a tough decision.

According to Hugo, the Dawn is not scheduled for drydock until November 2011. The drydock will be for a few technical issues and a few large projects like enlarging Dazzles and adding a buffet line to Topsiders, etc.

I was on the Dawn last week and smelled something - varnish?, paint?, ??? once or twice, so some work was being done. I saw maintenance crews a couple of times.

While overall the ship is in very good condition, it did look like deep cleaning (our cabin shower had some mold/mildew around the lower portion of the shower where the floor basin and wall sections meet, shower door and frame, and corners of the floor and trim) and maintenance (balcony rails could use some paint, missing fixture pieces, trim pieces need replacing or repositioned, hull painted around the anchor area) are needed. But for the age and heavy use of the ship, it was in very good shape.

We were on last week, too, and I would agree. I saw some maintenance going on here and there. Some of the edges of the furniture in our cabin were worn, but other than that the ship looked good.
