Dinner with the captain - how does it work

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know what the selection process is to have dinner at the captain's table. Is it based on your cabin category or are names just drawn out of a hat? Also, is it first or second seating or does it vary?

Until we "get out there"

I asked the Captain that same question during "meet the captain" session on the Mariner of the Seas . He didn't want to give me the direct answer, but did hint that one of the possibility one would be invited to his table is if somehow he run into you, chat with you and like you . I also read a post on this board awhile back, platinum C&A members were invited to the Captain table, they had sailed 20+ times with RCCL Another member was invited to the captain table since his Company has a close relationship with RCCL

It will be awhile before we are qualified to dine with the captain. I actually don't really care to sit at that too big of a table in the middle of the dinning room. It's too big for an intimate fine dinning experience. You might have to shout accross the table to talk to the captain.

Have a great trip

We were invited to the captains table on our first cruise with RCCL two years ago. We were in a suite as were all the others at our table. We just returned from our second cruise yesterday where we had a plain outside cabin. Never saw the captain.

I think that answers your question.

We have been at several captains tables and if you ever get the chance it is a nice experience.

We have been to dine with the captain twice .(different cruise ships ) Our head waiter got us the invitation the first time . The second time we met the captain and his wife when we were waiting to clear customs . We were coming back on the ship for the second week .(back to back cruise )
I really don't think it has anything to do with the category of cabin you are in (at least I hope not ) to be invited to the captains table . Our first invitation ---- we were in an inside cabin with our youngest son who was 17 years old then .
Both occasions were most enjoyable .

Out of 17 cruises, we have been asked to dine with the Captain twice and the third time was with the Staff Captain, I think that was the term used, but I guess the next man in charge, and we have only booked as high as a mini suit and the other time was a balcony and the next an inside! So there you go, who knows when or why, I have to admit, I thought it would be a stuffy evening, but we had a delightful evening each and every time.

I think that known celebrities and/or gorgeous women get the invitation. Suite sitation does not seem to be the control factor.
I have been at the table only once and did not find it especially great.

Gene624:
So what your suggesting is that I should perhaps send the Captain a picture of my wife in advance to score us some seats!!
She looks like Kathy Kinney, on the Drew Carey Show. Waddaya think?!?!

Honestly...I wouldn't care either way. I'm happy sitting with...a family from CA, IL, or MA...as long as they are there to have a great time, eat well, and have good conversation. I've never been one to be impressed by someones title. I only go to the Captain's party to have a few cocktails!!! My son, 6 at the time, wanted to meet the Captain...who was at a table nearby...our people had to talk to his people...and he was gracious and had my son come over...pictures...the whole deal...made my son's day. I'm not as easily impressed.
