Fishing in Whittier?

Is Whittier a good place for fishing? Wondering about shore fishing or a fishing charter after arriving by train in Whittier on the day the cruise starts. First, is Whittier a good place for fishing? Second, is there time?

I've fished 'from shore' in Whittier, but it would be quite a hike to Smitty's Cove, my 1st choice, and one must be aware of when the tide comes in. Silvers tend to mill around Shakespeare Creek, Smitty's Cove, Salmon Run and the Whittier small boat harbor, ranging from 8 to about 20 pounds.

Your question got me thinking that my DH would probably rather go fishing than go with me on another glacier cruise in Whittier. We also arrive on the 12:05 train, and our ship leaves at 8:30, so I thought he should be back by 6:30. Our cruise is in August.

Anyway, here's the reply I got from Whittier Marine Charters. You might want to check it out.

Hi Suzanne,

Thanks for writing. That's a pretty short time window, but it might be possible to put a five hour salmon trip together.

Thanks for the info. Suzanne, you aren't by any chance on the 8/16 cruise out of Whittier?

This gives us some options. Trying to figure out when the best day to work fishing into the trip.

Missed us by two days! We're on the Coral Princess August 14th.

I bought a two week fishing license for my husband for Valentines's Day so he is fishing every chance he can get the week prior to the cruise on the Kenai peninsula. He's been fishing in Homer, Seward and the Kenai River, and of course liked them all.

Just FYI, the last time we were in Whittier it was pouring rain, but there were several guys fishing right by the docks where you pick up the glacier cruises. Not the prettiest area, but the fish didn't seem to care.:)
