Just off the Pride (2/21-2/28) Review

My husband and I just got off the Pride yesterday and it was a first cruise for both of us. We are both 49 years old and love travelling.

Embarkation was a total breeze. We parked at the port because we live about 20 minutes away. We parked and were on the ship within about 40 minutes. Total piece of cake.

As soon as we got on the ship, we went straight up to the Lido deck and had a few drinks. As soon as we heard that the rooms were open, we went down to check ours out. We were on deck 5 and had a balcony room. I thought it was roomy enough for a week and loved the balcony, even though it was pretty cold here. 4:00 was muster drill and then sailaway!

We ate in the MDR Sunday and Monday. Sunday we were by ourselves at a table for six. On Monday, cruise elegant night, another couple showed up to eat. We were experiencing really rough winds the boat was really rocking. People were having a hard time walking straight because the boat was rocking that much. I ordered the lobster and shrimp dinner, and I started feeling nauseous halfway through dinner. I waited until my husband was done, and then we went back to our room. I had taken Bonine, but, I guess it was just too much motion. I went to bed, and really didn't get up again until the next morning.

Tuesday night we had reservations at David's steakhouse, and I was glad I was feeling better. To get to the steakhouse you can take the elevator up to 10 or get off at 9, and walk up a glass staircase. I took one look at that staircase, and got back on the elevator. It is see through and suspended above the atrium, and you can see all the way down underneath of you. The food and service at David's was seriously some of the best I've ever had. I had the shrimp cocktail, grilled prime rib chop, and for dessert, the chocolate sampler. OMG. Delicious. The best steak I've ever had. Well, worth the extra $$.

Wednesday we pulled into Cape Canavral and really didn't have any excursions planned, and I'm glad, because it was drizzling when we got off the boat. We grabbed a shuttle into Cocoa Beach area, walked the beach to the pier, and walked back. We ended up in a bar right off the beach, and had some fish and chips and a few drinks. I had a category 4 hurricane. I was afraid to go for the cat 5 because with that one they added 151 rum, in addition to all the other rums. It was kinda funny, because as the place was filling up (it was open with some tables inside and some outside) everyone coming in we recognized from the ship.

The only complaint I have about the entire trip, happened on Wednesday. We went to our usual table for dinner. We were the first ones there, we each got a drink, I started eating a roll, and we both ordered our meal. The couple that had come to dinner once, since we had been there, showed up with another couple that we had not met. These four were all assigned to our table. They were travelling together. We chatted for a few minutes, when the hostess came up to me and asked me if we would mind moving to another table, just for that night. She went on to explain that another couple, who all the people at our table knew, were celebrating their anniversary, and they all wanted to sit together. It was very awkward, and I said ok, but once we moved, two women showed up at our table and sat in our seats. When the waiter at our new table came up, he started trying to tell us that these seats were taken and someone usually sat there. So no one even bothered to explain to the wait staff at the new table that we had moved, and they kind of acted like we were trying to sit at some random table. By the end of my meal, I was really pretty pissed about the whole situation.

We did go to dinner the next night (Thursday) and no one else showed up at our table, and our waittress (who was wonderful the entire time) even made a comment about not understanding what happened the night before. It was really strange, and I don't think we should have been asked to move, especially once we started eating, etc. We did go back on Thursday, as I've said, but that was the last night we ate in the MDR.

Thursday, we were in Nassau, and I was so glad we did not plan any excursions. Most of them got cancelled due to really windy conditions. We shared a taxi van with two other couples and got a 3 and a 1/2 hour island tour, with stops, for $20. a person. We tipped our driver well, he was one of the nicest people you could ever meet.

Friday, Freeport. The weather was spectacular! 75 and sunny. We just got a shuttle into Lucaya and we were with about 8 other people. The driver dropped us off and we all agreed to meet at 12:45 in front of the Raddison hotel to go back to the ship. We were supposed to be back by 1:30. The ship sailed at 2. We walked around the shops, had a drink, grabbed a bite to eat, had another drink on the beach, then went into the casino. I quickly lost $20., but my husband actually won some money. He went to cash out at about 12:30, and the machine started spitting quarters out, very slowly. After $7. it stopped and flashed a message on the screen that the machine was out of money and to call an attendant. Okay. It's now 12:35. He put the light on the machine, waited, waited, here come's someone. She tells him she has to go get more quarters. It's now 12;45. We are still waiting. I ran out front to let our driver know we were there, and what was going on. Only 2 other people from our ride over the Lucaya were out front, along with the driver. I went back in to the casino, and still no quarters. I'm starting to get a little panicky now, because my husband is kind of not leaving til he get's his money. It's now 1:00. He finally gets his money, and now we are waiting for other people from our ride to show up. By the time we actually left, it was after 1:00. All I could picture was the Pride sailing away! We did make it, but my husband is telling everyone how I said, "Well, I don't have any cash, give me $10. so I can get back to the boat". He gave me $10. and asked me if I would really leave him there. Ummm, yes. If you are gonna miss the boat for a few dollars, ummm, yeah.

Friday, we ate dinner up on the Lido deck and discovered warm chocolate melting cake on the buffet. OMG. This stuff is sooo good. I've already gotten a recipe for it and am gonna make it when my kids all come to dinner.

Saturday, nice day on the ship, just bummed to be coming home.

Debarkation was a breeze. We did self-assist, and once they called our floor, we were out and driving home within 20 mins.

The staff on this ship were amazing. They remember your names, they go above and beyond your expectations. The ship itself was beautiful. Well maintained and very clean.

We have already talked about taking another cruise, maybe something with a few more stops. Our cruise director, Jaime, mentioned a few cruises with 5 and 7 stops. I love getting off of the ship and exploring.

Anyone with any questions, feel free!

I enjoyed reading your review. Sounds like a fun time, all but the dining room situation, which would have bothered me as well. Regarding the slot cash out in Freeport, I had to giggle because that sounds like something that would happen to me and my DH. I would have been freaking out about missing the ship as each minute went by!

Your excursions sound similar to what we are planning. Did you have to book the shuttle to Cocoa Beach ahead of time or did you just get off the ship and the shuttle was there?

At Freeport, did you have to pay to use the beach at the Radisson?

Do you know what night they had the past guest party?

Thanks.

We didn't book any excursions through Carnival before we left, because we weren't sure of the weather. We did book the reservation at the steakhouse.

When we got to Port Canaveral, there were quite a few shuttle buses to take you to Cocoa Beach. It was $10. per person, round trip. This included Cocoa Beach, Ron Jon store, Walmart, the mall, etc. We only went to Cocoa Beach, but the shuttle ran every 20 minutes. Totally worth it.

In Freeport, once we walked through the market, the Radisson was next door and we wandered over to the beach. There was an outside bar set up, and you could buy drinks, go on the beach, whatever. There was no one there to monitor who was going to the beach and I don't know how they would know, the hotel was huge. If I had known that, I would have spent my entire time on the beach. Also, I got a drink called a Bahama sunset. I have no clue what was in it, but, it was delicious, and pretty strong too!

That happened to us on the Victory and a RCI cruise. It screwed everything up for the rest of the week. Nobody knew what was going on. We will not do it again if were asked.

How was the water along the coast ??

I felt like we were between a rock and a hard place. If we moved, I was not gonna be happy, but, if we said no, it would have been uncomfortable for everyone. I'm not sure who at our table knew what was going on, because, the guy next to my husband (who we met on Monday), asked my husband what was going on. He seemed kinda confused too. I still am not sure what happened. I just thought it was kind of unfair to ask us, since, we had been at dinner every night except one, and no one else at our table had been except one night. I also felt like the hostess should not have gotten involved. If the women wanted to ask us to switch, I would have felt more comfortable, than the way it happened. If I had it to do over, I would not have moved.

The water along the coast was great. I loved everything about this cruise. I am having withdrawals from the soft-serve ice cream machine. I had a cone every day in the afternoon. Every day the ice cream got a little bit higher on my cone. LOL

Great review!! I'm glad the most of the trip was a positive one! All it takes is one cruise to get you hook to sailing again.

That was a close one with the slot machine!! Glad that you didn't wait too long!

As for the dining room incident, I could understand if the other couple had eaten dinner with you since the first night and ask if a change be ok and also check with the head waiter so no confusion would occur. But to show up that one night and ask for change, I would told the hostess, no, we have already begun to eat dinner. That was just rude of all the other people involved.

Thanks for sharing the trip!!!

Although it wasn't fair of them to ask you to move, I think you made the best decision. Standing your ground would not have been an advantage. You got to eat where and when you expected to eat. It just isn't worth being a hard-azz even though others are being unreasonable. I understand the frustration but some things just aren't worth the aggravation.

I'm glad you had a great time...since you mentioned you had a balcony cabin on deck 5, may I ask what cabin # you were in? (we'll be in a balcony cabin on deck 5 when we cruise on the Pride in August...did you happen to take any pics of your room? I'd love to see them if you have any:D)

Nice review- sorry about the rough seas, but it sounds like you both had a nice time anyway!

We had cabin # 5235. It was advertised as obstructed view, and there was a lifeboat top right below our balcony, but, I loved our room. I must be crazy, but, I found it cozy and inviting. The bed was really comfortable, the pillows were great and I haven't slept that good in a long time. I think once I got used to the rocking of the boat, it lulled me to sleep at night (and sometimes during the day).

I haven't uploaded any pics to photobucket yet, but, when I do I will post a pic of our room. I'm glad I didn't upgrade to a suite when I got the call because it really wasn't necessary.

We are booked for the May 16 sailing in rooms 5167 and 69, also obstructed views (but adjoining balcs). Were all the rooms on this floor obstructed by boats beneath them or did some have boats in front? Thanks...can't wait either way!!!

Glad you had a great cruise!!!! I agree with you Carnivals steak house is the BEST and none of the other mass lines specialty restaurants come close to Carnival's. I pray that Carnival never changes the quality of the food they serve at them.

For all you out there that would have the audacity

to asked me to move I while I was eating....you will get a very load HELL or _ _ _ _ NO...so don't ask!!!

Sorry can't help that I'm Italian

We're going to be in cabin #5235 when we sail in December! What a coincidence. How close was it to the elevator? We picked this room because it looked close on the deck plans and my husband is disabled and has trouble walking very far. Can't wait to see your pictures of the room! This is our first Carnival cruise.
