Himself Posted April 14, 2010 #2 Share Posted April 14, 2010 A few comments: First thanks for your faithful Post David. Secondly, the Zaandam and the Zuiderdam are in two of my favorite places on the face of this earth. Thirdly it was on the night of April 14, 1912 that the Tytanic went down on her maiden voyage. Finally, my mother's mother (my maternal grandmother) was born in Mahany Plain, Pa on April 14, 1871. She moved to Chicago for the World's Fair of 1892 and never moved back. Kiwi Kruzer Posted April 14, 2010 #3 Share Posted April 14, 2010 Volendams call at Brisbane is the last on her circumnavigation of Australia. Next stop is Sydney and then she heads back home after her season downunder. With cruising becoming more and more popular down here, I heard on local boards that many folk are heading off to Portside to have a look at her today. Himself Posted April 14, 2010 #4 Share Posted April 14, 2010 I hope it becomes so big down there that HAL has to send a Vista Class ship down under and then we can once again have the Volendam doing the Caribbean.
trvlcrzy Posted April 14, 2010 #5 Share Posted April 14, 2010 Thirdly it was on the night of April 14, 1912 that the Tytanic went down on her maiden voyage. My students read about the Titanic, and asked me several questions before our cruise. I was able to ask a junior officer for some more information while the Lower Promenade cleared after our safety briefing (formerly known as muster drill). It was fascinating to learn the changes in requirements that happened as a direct result of the Titanic tragedy. The entire ship's complement must be able to leave via one side, so if the ship is listing too badly for one side's lifeboats to be used, all can leave the ship from the other side. The Ryndam has a lifeboat/rescue boat capacity of 2100 people in spite of its smaller number of people onboard.
Himself Posted April 14, 2010 #6 Share Posted April 14, 2010 Thanks for the information. I did not know that all could leave from one side in case of a bad list. In 1956--I believe August of 1966, the Andrea Doria was hit by the Stockholm and sunk within an hour or so. All the PAX got off safely. Tell me about the new life boat drill. Don't we have to put on the life jackets any more? Himself
trvlcrzy Posted April 15, 2010 #7 Share Posted April 15, 2010 You do not even have the life jacket with you! You go to your lifeboat station and stand. There is no roll call by cabin number. They announce that crew members are checking all passenger areas. The crew members demonstrate the proper way to don a life vest. These were the "coat style" with the closing fasteners instead of the tying type. What amazed me most... There was still too little room as we stood there. I whispered to David, "How did we all fit here when we WERE wearing the life jackets?" :p ...and this was BEFORE we stuffed ourselves with delectable food and desserts! Himself Posted April 15, 2010 #8 Share Posted April 15, 2010 I sounds to me like a new style life jacket. It will be interesting to see if the Rotterdam does this in Alaska in July. I hope you and David had a great cruise on the Rydam.
