Cynthia's directions are perfect. We followed them a few weeks ago. If you don't go to the Archaeological Museum, you can return to the port from the Monastiraki Metro Station.

Rick

Thanks! Glad it worked well for you. :)

Thank you also Cynthia for sharing. Last month, we followed your directions with a little twist (please see below) and had a wonderful and adventurous time in Athens.

Now the twist: instead of walking or taking bus #843 from the pier to the metro station at Pireaus, we took bus #049, a smooth & not crowded ride, directly from Pireaus to Omonia thanks to the kind advice of the kiosk owner near bus stop for #843 & #049. Bus #049 terminated near Omonia Metro Station where we caught the Red Line to Acropolis.

For some time, we were worried that we might not be able to visit Athens. We were so grateful that we eventually could and did it on our own with yours and others kind help.

Nicole

Thanks for the info re: the other bus 049. We were wondering how long we would wait for the other bus just to go to the Metro with so many other people getting off the ships. p.s. I am not passing this info on to anyone else tho!!!!

Hi

I guess aside from the the bus schedules, bus 843 runs every 7/8 min and 049 runs every 10 min, (link to Athens Urban Transport Organisation http://www.oasa.gr/index.asp?asp=routes/bus_stop.asp&route_id=+843&rvariant_id=1&medium=0&s_t=0 how long you would have to wait depends on how many other passengers decide to use the buses as well. For us, it was not crowded at all at the bus stop. We missed one bus 843 when we were walking to the kiosk. Shortly after we bought our tickets, one bus 049 turned up. When we were on the bus, we noticed some passengers (they did stand out among the locals!) were walking from the pier towards the metro station. However, in the afternoon on our return to the ship, we took the metro then bus 843. It was more crowded at the bus stop than in the morning but we got on. Again, we saw some passengers were walking back to the ship. Don't know if they had been waiting for the buses for a long time and gave up. Anyway, whatever you decide to do, have a wonderful and safe time in Athens.

Can someone PLEASE give me the best way to get from the port to the metro and the the best exit for the Acropolis and then how to get to the Plaka and then back to Pireaus. Thanks.

We were in Athen on a Sunday so the crowds and traffic were very light. The cabs were 20 euros per cab not per passenger. We were told that if they balked at the price to simply turn around and walk away and when we did the price came down. There were plenty of cabs both at the terminal in Piraeus and at the Acropolis. The trip took about 20 minutes each way but I have been told on a weekday or Saturday it can take up to 1 1/2 hours because of the traffic.

The Acropolis, the Agora, the Plaka, Harians Arch and many other sites are all within a short walking distance of the Acropolis. If you are looking for a great place for lunch in the Plaka, look for a taverna called Scholario. Its family style Greek and the food was fantastic...

We enjoyed Scholario as well 2 weeks ago for lunch. Substantial Mezes for 2 with 5 choices including a drink was 28 Euros. You get even more choices if you have a larger group. A tad off the beaten path so you need a detail map of Plaka to find but it was worth it. No views except for locals on the street but sitting on the shaded porch to eat was delightful after a hot day tromping around.
