Penguin Guano and water proof pants

On one of the threads someone mentioned needing two pairs of water proof pants because your outer layer becomes smelly due to stepping in penguin guano....seems you can't get away from it. Anyone else have a problem? Do not want to carry two pairs unless really necessary. Thanks

We took one pair each. You can hose them off when you come back to the ship. They will be a little smelly by the end of the trip, but not nearly as smelly as a penguin colony.

We brought ours home thinking they might be handy to have around the lake, but with repeated washing the smell still wouldn't come out. I recommend throwing them out before you come home. We bought ours at Sports Authority in the fishing section. You can buy more expensive water proof pants made for outdoor sports, but it's not necessary.

We wore long johns and fleece pants under the water proof pants, so be sure to buy them big enough for layering.

Didn't have any problems with smell being embedded in our waterproof pants (and we used them on over 20 landings). We rinsed the hems off in the water before re-boarding the zodiacs and gave them a second rinse in the shower if necessary when we got back on the ship. Brought the pants back (granted we did pack them in a plastic bag), washed them thoroughly in the washing machine, and have used them on subsequent trips to other wet-weather destinations.

Unless you sit in penguin poo, or slide down a hill covered with poo, the most that you are likely to get would be around the bottom of the pants. Just follow the other posts, rinse/soap and wash in a machine on your return. If you do sit and slide, you will likely be voted out of the Zodiac!

We took one good quality pair, the ship's crew wanted us to wear the legs outside of the boots, but we wore ours with the legs inside the boots, and that kept them clean, and also allowed all of our boot to be sprayed down when we came back on board. We also wore sealskin socks, (waterproof) just in case any water got inside our boots. Worked great.

That can allow water to get inside your boots if it is raining or snowing as we had in some of our stops!

We wore sealskin socks which are good insulators and completely waterproof, even if you step in water over the top of your boot. We had rain and snow also but our feet stayed dry and warm every time we were out on the ice.

We found it much better than having to take smelly, poo ridden pants back to our cabin.
