$10p.p to eat at night Kings Court area

Hi all

I have read the posts where you say that $10 is a reasonable charge for the alternative dining restaurants but my grouse is that we booked our cruise in Jan this year and, at that time, eating in an alternative venue was included in the price. We are using our hard earned savings to book a trip of a lifetme sailing from Southampton to Sydney and we had looked forward to having a change of scenery for eating on our seven week trip. Now when we think of how much the tips will cost and a half bottle of wine each night then $10 per person seems a lot - especially as I said we thought it was included in the price. I really feel that Cunard are in breach of contract.

I agree with you,we booked this cruise in Oct 2009 and intended to use the King's court as an alternative to eating in the Brittania Restaraunt on such a long cruise. This was not in the brochure when I booked it and I am most annoyed.

I have written to Cunard till I am blue in the face to no avail. Maybe if some more of tried as well they may see the error of their ways. Not holding my breath but if nobody complains then nothing will be done:mad:

IMHO there is a good case against Cunard for those people that booked prior to the changes. Cunard are allowed to make changes for operational reasons e.t.c. However I do not think this would be considered operational?

I would sugest that Cunard are in breach of Package Travel, Package Holidays And Package tours SI 2992 S4(1)'' No organiser or retailer shall supply to a consumer and descriptive matter concerning a package, the price of a package or any other conditions applying to the contract which contains and misleading information.

s(2) If an organization or retailer in in breach of paragraph(1) he shall be liable to compensate the consumer for any loss which the consumer suffers in consequence.

Seems to me that Cunard did mislead guests who booked prior to the change. AS at the time off booking there was no additional charge

I sent an email and complained and they seemed to side step the fact that the cruise had been booked so far in advance and said the charge was as per the latest brochure.I don't mind formal nights but with 39 on a 96 day cruise I don't think I will be at every one.

Formality is a well known part of a Cunard voyage, one wonders if you dislike them, why you booked this trip. This is not a criticism but merely an observation.

When we were on the QM2 in June - there were about 3 or 4 specialty dining areas anda general buffet area. I took it to mean that in those specialty restaurants there would be a $10 charge. Now, I see there is a charge for the general buffet portion of that King's area !! That is over the top !!

The main dining room and room service are the only venues for dinner that is included in your cruise fare - Right ???

I am one of those who has complained about the surcharge. I have no problem about dressing formally - in fact I look forward to it - but I would like to dress formally in one of the alternative restaurants without incurring the surcharge which Cunard introduced long after I made my booking. BTW I understand that there will still be a self service section of King's court which will not incur a surcharge

The dress code for the King's Court is Elegant Casual, it is never formal so you would probably be the only person so attired.

Being a novice to all of this I am grateful for your advice. I did know that the self service was elegant casual but not Lotus or La Piazza etc.,. Mind you I'm not likely to use them now am I?:(

Many thanks for your observation.I did not say I dislike formal nights, in fact I said I do not mind them.If everbody went to the Main Dining Room every night there would be no need for an alternative would there,so that is probably why there are other options.

It is only £6 each, if the food is really what you want, that price shouldn't put you off once or twice. Or if they are totally boycotted Cunard will change their minds about it I think. But will you get solidarity - I doubt it. :)

I think I'd rather eat in Brittania and spend my £6 on a cocktail! I am not going to pay extra for something that was included in the price of my fare when I booked - I'm a Scot with a reputation to keep after all! The alternative eating places would have been nice but they aren't an essential part of what will be a wonderful time. I may be wrong but I think that a few other people will boycott Kings Court. The most important thing is that we will be having a holiday of a lifetime and can hardly believe that it is really happening.:)

I tend to agree with you, I am sure that you will, and I certainly hope that you do enjoy the trip and remember that you can use the restaurants during the day.

Just off QM2 yesterday, half way through the cruise we learned tht the $10pp charge was in force for the alternative dining areas of the Kings Court. Cruise started Nov 27th through to Dec 8.

Dining in one of these was discussed at the table, but no one felt that the $10 pp charge was acceptable, so the entire table (6 solo travellers ) stayed in Britannia.

I will be writing a review, cruise was like curates egg , "good in parts"

Thanks Lynn, looking forward to your review. I am sure that, if enough passengers don't utilise the alternative dining areas, Cunard will revise their strategy (assuming there is one). What we need is solidarity.

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO Fellow Cruisers: I just returned yesterday from the QM2. When the $10 charge is instituted come 01/13/2011 it is not unreasonable. Todd English charges $30 per person and no one complains about that.

I found that the food in the Kings Court area is better than the food in the Brittinia Restuant. The service is better too. I ate dinner up there several times.

And this, I think, may be the reasoning behind the charge. Casino, can you (or Jimsgirl) tell us if the Kings Court evening restaurants were fully booked on your crossing? Hope you had a good time.

Yes you did but you didn't pay any surcharge did you? When we booked, the eating in the alternative dining areas was included in our fare so it's very easy for you to say but far more unpalatable for us who did not expect to pay a surcharge:mad:

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO buckirj1: I didn't take a transatlantic crossing. It went to the Carribbean. However, the Kings Court at the resturants you needed a reservation for sometimes it was fully booked. However, if you know who to speak to he might be able to get you in. Some of the resturants at night have a tablecloth setting. Not so during the day. The buffett alternates between resturants up there. One night it might be in La Piazzia another night it might be in the Carvery or another resturant.

Even if Cunard puts a surcharge on the Kings Court resturants of $10 a person it is still well worth it.

Easy to say when you didn't have to pay isn't it? You got it included in the price of your cruise didn't you? Well I knew it was included in the price of my cruise as well until Cunard moves the goalposts I won't be paying to eat in " La Piazzia" or any other of the places in King? Court:mad:
