I have heard this before about any elevator. Was in las Vegas this month and tried it a number of different hotels and it didn't work. Maybe it will work on a ship but I doubt it. Even if it did work just think of the other passenger that can't get an elevator. Might be someones 80 year old mom or dad.

I have an IPhone 4 with an app on it for RCCL. Once out to sea I put my phone on airplane mode and use the deck plans on my phone to get around. On the Majesty someone asked if I knew where a bathroom is, I pulled out my phone and showed them.

Hmmm.... Some of us don't care to be "gotten", and frankly, tips are what you make of them. I suppose in your own self importance because you don't see good use for the tip, you feel the urge to sound off about it? Of course it's optional for use when some ELSE sees fit, and ok for you to ignore. Just so happens that plenty of people on mobility scooters who get trapped in busy elevators it is truly a helpful tip. Especially with so many rude teens floating around. Also something half sick people afraid of closed in spaces appreciate once they're already feeling bad. Surely because you don't see the usefulness doesn't mean it doesn't exist to someone else.

 

Please feel free to find the largest audience of "other folks" as you like and lead them to all things proper on your next cruise my friend. Try not to throw rocks at the kids on chemo who don't want to share your space though. RCI often has many on "wish trips" with moderate immune systems at best. Be sure and offer your wordly wisdom on their narcacism and their non sharing attitudes.

As the aunt of a 15 year old girl waiting to have her Make A Wish wish fulfilled, please make sure you don't make my niece stand and wait while you are selfishly skipping floors.

I apologize for being harsh, but there was no mention in your original "tip" about compromised immune systems or mobility scooters. I, and several other readers, understood it as aimed at anyone who wanted an "express" elevator to get to their desired deck without stopping for other guests.

 

As Deanswife pointed out, you have no way of knowing who you are making wait by doing so. As the parent of a cancer survivor and the recent caretaker of 3 parents/parents-in-law who were wheelchair bound, I am more sensitive than many to the needs of "other folk".

 

Now how about we get back to providing tips that would not infringe on others' enjoyment on a cruise.

Some really great tips, and now another argument over who is rude and who is not. Sigh.

 

(1) Beware of how windy it can be on deck at night AND in the morning. I went all the way to the front of the ship on Navigator early one morning, and nearly blew away. For real - it was seriously scary and probably should have been closed off.

 

(2) I also agree that you should be careful not to overplan. Just enjoy your time and roll with it. If you "miss" anything, you'll just have to go back. ;)

 

(3) See how people bicker and gripe at eachother on these boards? Let's try not to let it happen on board. (Hey, a girl can dream).

 

Enjoy - there is nothing better than a trip to sea.

I started this thread to get some great tips on our upcoming cruise. Thought it would be fun to share what we know with each other. I had no idea that it would open such a can of worms, not on one occasion but two. Thanks for the tips guys, keep them coming, but lets play nice. Everyone has an opinion, nothing wrong with that. If you choose to use it, great, if not, great. I am always surprised how things can rub people the wrong way when that was not the intention or motive. Sometimes we can type things that we would never ever say in person. My rule of forums is I would never type something to someone that I would not say face to face.

 

I am the mother of an adult son with disabilities. In his life we have taken advantage of things that other people probably frown upon but it was the decision that we made at the time that was right for us. And frankly if we were somewhere and he was in pain and needed to rest quickly, I would use the "express" elevator tip. Not something I would do every time, but not going to lie about never using it.

 

Again thanks for all the tips, love them and an very much looking to using them on FOS!:)

DH has some strong opinions (as I do too!) about all of the above but realize that some topics should not be discussed due to so many varied outlooks of life. I want to enjoy our meals and times to relax. I always remind him about off limit topics until he is probably sick of it!

 

I just know he wrote the letter in Dear Abby this Sunday about me! It said it was from Wisconsin (but I know it was from Texas) and the DH was commenting on the backseat driving of his DW. She believes just like I do that we desparately need to tell DH how to drive! So to all the DWs out there who keep things moving smoothly - driving and conversation wise - Thank you!

We'll be taking our first RC cruise in 20 days...this thread has helped get me into the mood. It's only for four days, and I liked the idea of taking along a printout of the deck plan since it always takes me a couple of days to find my way around. On a short cruise, knowing the layout of the ship will help.

Another tip is to not only read the floor plans, but explore the ship early. On the day of departure, if you arrive early and get onboard early, you can grab lunch then while the masses are still upstairs chowing down on lunch you can explore the public areas.

 

The public indoor areas should be mostly empty at that time as in port the stores and casinos are closed. Furthermore, on day of departure, half of the normal bars are also closed indoors. With so little going on its easy to explore and find the quickest routes around before the crowds build and its too late.

Buy new shampoo, soap for the trip. Something tropical sounding with coconut scent or passion fruit or something. Use it on the ship and then continue using it when you get home. Never fails to "take me back" for just another minute or so. :)

Motivations weren't listed as a necessity to share information that others might find useful. It just happens that I'm the administrator for a community of 14,288 member CHOA (Children's Health Care of Atlanta) support group that raises money and promotes events within several social network sites ( http://www.causes.com/causes/143181-children-s-healthcare-of-atlanta-choa?recruiter_id=27439961 ). I also am the father of a survivor of Rhabdomyosarcoma, who's story is illustrated in this same group. My motivations for posting the tip were to be helpful to those who might need it, regardless of my flippant choice of pen and words.

 

While you're so quick to judge the evil that others supposedly are up to, and without an open mind that some of us don't automatically assume the worse in others, I can easily see where my tip is open to exploitation. You're obviously on to me and my desire to make all cruise passengers have to use the staircase (perhaps still ultimately resulting in some good as you chubby ones can work off the free ice cream and bacon you've gorged on). I will gladly digress from posting anymore malicious tips meant solely to hurt others, and help no one in need, without first stating proper use and motivation. Thank you kindly for setting my moral compass straight.

First order of business when my kids got their shiny new "charge cards" was to go to the general store and buy them a lanyard to keep the card around their necks (which would be promptly rung for losing the card)..... then I went up stairs (without using priority mode on the elevator, just to be clear), signed them into the kids program where they got FREE LANYARDS. Dang it.

If you have an iPhone go to the online iTunes store and you will find a couple of applications such as "Ship Mate" and "Royal Caribbean International" that show you deck plans. Great tool for finding your way round RCL's ships!

You can get a dozen basic whistle lanyards at just about any sporting goods store for under $10. Sell the others for a buck a piece.:cool:
