Stout93 Posted January 16, 2011 #1 Share Posted January 16, 2011 I dont see any type of white water rafting excursion available in any of the main ports. Maybe I'm missing it? Wanted to throw it out there on the board to confirm.
Budget Queen Posted January 17, 2011 #2 Share Posted January 17, 2011 There aren't any within the inside passage ports. There was a mention a while ago, of an option in the Yukon?? Murrary, poster "Yukon" would know.
Yukon Posted January 17, 2011 #3 Share Posted January 17, 2011 The Tutshi River at Skagway is small and short but offers world class whitewater. Not aimed at cruisers so you need a rental car to get to the put-in, and only offered early in the season (June-July) when the water is high (no dates on the Web site - email them for the 2011 schedule). http://www.tatshenshiniyukon.com/ and http://www.explorenorth.com/library/rivers-lakes/tutshi_river.html
account4fun Posted January 21, 2011 #4 Share Posted January 21, 2011 We are doing WW rafting on the land portion of our cruisetour in Denali. They are suppose to be Class III and IV rapids so it should be interesting :)
Yukon Posted January 21, 2011 #5 Share Posted January 21, 2011 We are doing WW rafting on the land portion of our cruisetour in Denali. They are suppose to be Class III and IV rapids so it should be interesting :) There are a few options at Denali, from the fairly calm but very scenic upper river to the much wilder and much more spectacular Nenana Gorge. Even on the Gorge runs you can go from easy (with the guide doing the work) to wild (with everyone paddling) - the guide decides whether the people on the raft have the experience to take the best lines through. Water levels, of course, play a big part in the experience you'll get on a given day.
WatchHill Posted January 22, 2011 #6 Share Posted January 22, 2011 Late last May, we did they Canyon Run while in the Denali area. Our guide was a wilderness first responder and nursing student from GA, who spent her summers in AK. Safety is a primary concern and the company asked about our experience prior to making a decison on where to begin the rafting trip. Both DH and I have done the Colorado, Snake and Allagash. Dress warmly, lots of layers...glacial melting and the prior evening's light rain made for swift & very cold water. Darcy
