A walking tour of Nassau, a self guided tour that costs you nothing

Here is a great way to see Old Town Nassau and learn a bit about its history. It takes in most of the sights you can pay for, but this one is free and all you need are some walking shoes.

Have a look at http://www.*****.com/nassau

It is one in a series of adventures on foot. The others are in Europe, but this one is made for the Bahamas.

Awesome, thanks! We are so undecided on what to do in Nassau since we are going end of Feb, we might do this. Now....if it was warmer I would be doing Blue Lagoon but don't want to pay the $$ if it ends up too cold to swim :).

;) Thanks for all the effort you've put into this. If I doing the tour solo, will it be safe; some areas look a bit deserted.

The area uphill from St. Francis Church is probably not too 'safe' at night, but I would not worry about going anywhere on this walk during the day. Keep in mind that most people along this route are working during the day

and a lot of tourists don't know about this walk. Maybe you can talk someone on your cruise to join you. In any case, have a nice trip.

Thank you Cardamon for your nice comments about the walking tour. I noticed that you are also interested in going to the Daq Shack. Here is one comment about a happy customer. Again, I don't want to hipe any one place, but you asked for it.

For $5 you can sit in the tiny shack and have Brian or his son fix you the most amazing daquiri you've ever tasted. All fresh ingredients, made to order. Let your imagination run wild. If you are a cigar smoker (or like to be one on vacation) check out their amazing selection of cubans.

Thanks for posting. I was planning on this for our cruise in March and the pictures make it all the better. I'll probably being going solo since the DW has her heart set on visiting the casino at Atlantis. Thanks again.

I think you are the smarter of the two in your family, but don't tell DW this.

Enjoy your trip and walk.

March is around the corner and I am curious what your experience will be. Care to comment when you get back? Perhaps you can email me or post it on CC.

Be happy to.

BTW, I looked at your web page and saw the section on crown moldings. That will come in handy since that's a project DW has on my to do list.

That's really nice. I tried the other walking tour (Frommers) and we got totally lost. It'll be fun to try yours.

Thanks a lot:)

I used the basic Frommers' walk for the one I put together, but just like you, I had trouble following his writeup.

For example, after the Public Library he takes you to the post office and then back again to Shirley Street. It is confusing to read and follow his description of the Gregory Arch and after the St. Francis Church he talks about a street I never found.

What I will do, in a couple days or so, is to have the map and named locations available in pdf format so it is easier to print just the map. That way you can take one page with you as you tour.

So...I saw this walking tour..and took it...It was fine until we got to the fort. We thought there was a bathroom - but it was apparently a brothel...hmmm.explaining that to my 10 year old was interesting.....might i suggest paying for a tour?

That is the most outrageous comment I have heard yet. Yes, there are some vendors selling souvenirs, etc. to the left of Fort Fincastle, but they are certainly not selling 'sex'.

Clean bathrooms? Now that is another subject.

I would like to hear from others about 'brothels' at public places in Nassau.

About how long (assuming we take our time and read the history of each area that you've written) does this tour take? We had already planned on this as our one thing to do on the island and I was assuming it would be about 2-3 hours. Does this sound about right?

  • 8 months later...

Myself and a group of 3 other women downloaded the self guided walking tour to do while we were in Nassau - January 2013. As we were walking along West St, near the Art Museum and St Francis Cathedral, 2 young men walked by. 1 circled back around and came up behind one of the ladies and tried to steal her bag. She held on (even though the only thing in her bag was a towel) it was just a natural reaction to hold on. We screamed and a bunch of other locals came out and the guy ran off empty handed. A local women followed us in her car back to port, yelling out her window the whole way to other locals what had happened. So, we had a whole crew making sure we made it back safe. This was mid afternoon on a Friday. If you are a group of women, I would recommend getting a guide for $10, taking cab or getting another group with men to join. This could have ended up much worse but luckily the guy was not armed.
