Two reasons for disappearing of the map:

 

1) AIS transponder not transmitting (i.e. technical issues)

2) Shore-based AIS transponder not receiving

 

Unlikely to be 1) as there are redundant systems onboard (albeit slightly different technology)

Most likely 2). Look at the map for S.C de Tenerife and there is clearly something up - noy many vessels and quite a few with duff AIS data: http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/default.aspx?level0=100
