Travel Apps - Any Suggestions?

We, the rangers at Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, are thinking about developing a low-cost guide app for the glacier and/or the Tongass National Forest. It would have information about area trails, our wildlife, the glacier's formation and movements, etc. Is that something cruise passengers would find useful?

 

Definitely. I would prefer a self contained app that does not need internet/wifi once uploaded. If you have any popular self guided walks currently in print, convert that info in an app form.

Trail information like in your "Trail of Time" article on your website would be great. Of course if you make a free super app, people would not need to visit the visitor center

I've been using Ship Mate (free), which is available for almost all the major cruise lines. We're sailing Celebrity, and it's a great free app loaded with schedule, excursions, deck plan, ship's current location, etc. Try it!

Maybe Ship Mate isn't free- I don't remember. Looks like it might be $1.99. But worth it.

If you have an Android phone/tablet, I recommend downloading Locus Maps.

 

You can download maps for offline viewing at various different zoom levels (the closest zoom level can take up a lot of space), but it then allows you to use your GPS without an internet connection and see where you are. Useful for sailing, especially the days at sea.

 

I plan on using this on my first ever cruise in two weeks to Alaska.
