Extra charges on Epic

I have searched for the info but have not found a complete list of the items and events that are not covered by the cruise fare.

I am looking to book a cruise for a large group. 4 adults (2 that are 1st time cruisers), and 4 kids ages 12 - 16. Because I have been on a couple cruises with CCL and RCCL, I am wanting to try something new. Would those of you who have been on the Epic please tell me if we would be charged for:

Room service

Pizza

Soft serve ice cream

Blue Man group

Sushi

Also, how many restaurants have upcharges? Any other upcharges you can think of?

Room service - No charge except for the party platters. Plan to tip, though.

Pizza - $5 for a pizza delivered anywhere on the ship. You can find some on the free buffet at lunch and dinner though.

Soft serve ice cream - free in the buffet and outdoor grill

Blue Man group - free, but make reservations

Sushi - you pay extra for this but not sure of pricing. I have read on these boards that it's a great value.

Also, how many restaurants have upcharges? Any other upcharges you can think of?

Restaurants w/o upcharges: Garden Cafe (buffet), Garden Grill (outdoors buffet), H20 (snacks), O'Sheehan's (pub food), Taste & Manhattan Room (the two MDRs)

All of the specialty restaurants will be an additional fee to dine

Other things that cost extra:

bowling

rock wall climbing

The room service is you daily service charge. Unless you get exceptional service and want to tip more. When you order food in, it's just expected to tip for them bringing it to you.

Pizza-they do offer pizza, made to order, and can be delivered to you in your room or where you are going. It does cost, I think it was $5.00 and it's huge. However, I didn't find it to be good, while others did like it. You can also get it 24/7.

The ice cream you will find in the buffet sections and it is free.

Blue Man is free.

The specialty restaurants are for an extra charge. Such as Teppanyaki, Noodle (Shanghais) Washabi Sushi Bar, Cirque dinner and show, LaCuina (Italian), Moderno. I can't remember any others off the top of my head. They all have different charges with a different experience. :D

You can go without eating in the specialty restaurants. The main dining room and buffet and O'Sheehans is excellent IMO and I have eaten in the other venues on other NCL ships so the only one I tried on the Epic was Modernos. So good I went there twice.

Blue Man Group, Second City, Howl at the Moon - included in the charge. Some don't like BMG but another thing I went twice to also.

Not included - alcohol, soda, $12 per person per day service charge (gratuity).

It is an awesome ship - again IMO - and you will have a great time!

Thank you all for the information. Mitsugirly, thank you I was able to open that attachment and it is very helpful.

You are welcome. I forgot that this pdf was even available (I used it last year I think it was) and then did a search to help you out. I'm glad I found it myself because I was wondering about the options available on our upcoming cruise. :D

Extras as on my most ships will include:

  • Drinks (soda and alcohol)
  • Shore Excursions
  • Internet Access
  • Phone calls (except internal ship) either mobile or from cabin
  • Spa treatments
  • Speciality gym classes (i.e instructor led)
  • Photos
  • Shops
  • Speciality restaurants - on Epic (Bistro, La Cucina, Cagneys, Moderno, Wasabi, Saka, Tepanyaki, chinese)
  • Speciality ents - on Epic Murder mystery/cirque dreams
  • Art Auctions
  • Casino
  • Bowling / Video games/pool/hockey
  • Ice bar
  • Nickleodeon breakfast
  • Speciality coffees
  • 24hr Pizza
  • Laundary services
  • Medical expenses (except sea sick remedies)
  • Pay per view movies in-cabin

And what you get in your ticket price:

  • All other ents (Blue Man/Jazz/variety acts/DJ's/deck parties/musicians/theatre/legends)
  • Water park
  • Food at Garden cafe, O'Sheehans, Taste, Manhatten room, outdoor buffet, spice h2o, atrium cafe
  • Room service (except Pizza)
  • Juices/milk at Breakfast
  • Sports Complex (inc court/rock-climbing etc..)
  • Teen lounge/kids area
  • Serviced Cabin
  • 24hr reception
  • Atrium screen movies/shows

Looks a lot to pay extra but you have to remember the bulk of your ticket price is actually spent on

A full-board serviced room ( work out equivalent in a hotel for same nights with food)

Travel costs (i.e. ship fuel) - again equivalent if you were to fly/ferry/drive between the locations

Port costs

Hence cruise companies make the money from increasing per passenger spend on the first list!!

I agree Craig, that is one of the many things I LOVE!!! about cruising. It is a great value for a family vacation. I will be making a strong case for the Epic when I suggest it to the adults we are traveling with.

Did I mention I love cruising :)
