Are there any ...nice hotels close to the pier? Hate to struggle to much with our luggage.

Hi Arlene,

I have spent some time researching hotels in San Juan for our ...cruise in January 2006, and have recently booked the intercontinental. It looks like a very nice hotel and is not too far away from the pier. My concern was not really proximity to the pier ( we have to get there no matter where we stay) but rather for cleanliness and reputation. Try logging on to www.tripadvisor.com and look up San Juan Hotels, they will all pop up, complete with travellers reviews!

Good Luck!

We stayed at the Intercontinenal in Aug before our AOS cruise. Got it through hotwire for about 130 for the night. Great hotel/resort you wont be dissapointed. It's about 15 mins from the pier.

Thanks emcemt!

Now I am REALLY looking forward to this hotel :)

It's a bit on the costly side....but hey.....I'll deal with it as long as I get a really great hotel.

Thanks again.

My parents stayed at the Milano and said it was fine - it is an smaller older hotel - but the location in Old San Juan is great. I stayed at the Wyndam OSJ last year (now the Sheraton) and yes - last year it was run down. As was said above - they've said they have done major renovations but haven't been there since so I wouldn't know.

I loved staying in Old San Juan and would highly recommend that over the Condado area if you like historical type settings over beach.

Good Afternoon.......

I've read on other threads that the RCCL Terminal is the the PanAmerican Terminal which isn't in the area of Old San Juan. I have also been doing some research with respect to hotels and have found good reviews on the Milano and the Coral Princess. You may want to go onto Trip Advisor site and research as they have write ups from individuals who have just recently been in the Hotels etc.:D Happy Hunting.... Anyone booked on the Feb.27/06 Cruise out of San Juan on the Empress of the Seas:)

AOS leaves from the Pan American pier. I know it, oh, so well. Here is a map: https://home.pacbell.net/rccooks/image_map.gif

We have stayed at the Caribe Hilton and the Wyndham Condado - both are very close to the Pan American Pier. We found the Caribe Hilton to be a little bit nicer. It has a very beautiful pool and beach area. The Wyndham, however, has a casino - which I won $600 on the dollar slots! They are both acceptable for a pre or post cruise stay. PS - try Priceline.com

We stayed at the Sheraton in January and also at the very same hotel the previous January when it was the Wyndham. On both occasions, it was fine - nothing spectacular but nothing terrible either. It was nice to be able to walk around Old San Juan. However, if you are sailing AOS, it sails from the Pan Am Pier and you will need to go by taxi regardless of where you stay. It's kind of isolated and you wouldn't walk there.

Before our January cruise, we meant up with Old Cars (who also posts on these boards) for drinks at the Hotel Milano's roof top restaurant. I have heard from him and others that this is an older hotel with a European feel. If you're looking for a hotel with some character, this might be a good choice, but I did not stay there and only saw the lobby (small, nothing happening here) and the restaurant (quiet, great sangria, nice view).

I still believe the Intercontinental is a great choice...only about 15 min from the pier and they have a casinao as well.....truly a 4 star hotel. Got a great price through hotwire and the room even had an ocean view with a small balcony. Beautiful hotel and pool. Only down side is it's a bit pricey on the property (drinks food etc.)

As was stated above - you will have to take a cab from any hotel - so the proximity to the pier is really not a consideration. You need to decide what kind of experience you want - Old San Juan has the history and is a nice walking town (always be careful at night - a great way to see it at night is http://www.*****.com/nighttales.htm, but we walked around on our own as well and never felt threatened ) or if you want pool/beachtime stay in the Condado area. It's not for walking and I've heard that it can be dangerous to walk around at night (a consideration if you're choosing it based on proximity to restaurants), but many of the resorts are beautiful and self contained.

We have stayed at the Marriott Stellaris resort, Comfort Suites and the Wyndham Conadado Plaza. The Condado Plaza is closer to the Pan AM Pier, but the Marriott is a nice hotel. I haven't ever booked thru Priceline, but aside from that, I think the Marriott with breakfast plan is the best buy of all. They also have a nice lobby with music at night, plus the casino. Good luck with your choice. I am sure you will be fine.
