Purpose of changing a flight number?

Hello,

Back in June I posted about the airline changing my flight. After a few responses I realized I was incorrect and that they actually had changed the time, but that the flight # was the same.

Now I've received an email that the actual flight number has changed-and I am curious what the purpose of that is?

Just to clarify, my original flight was:

Oct 6 Bos>CDG @ 6:55p Delta flight 48.

Oct 7 CDG>VCE @ 9:50a AF flight 1426,

and it was changed to

Oct 6 Bos>CDG @ 7:25p Delta flight 48.

Oct 7 CDG>VCE @ 9:50a AF flight 1426.

And has now been changed to

Oct 6 Bos>CDG @ 7:25p Delta flight 0577.

Oct 7 CDG>VCE @ 9:50a AF flight 1426

Thanks!
