Koh Samui

We are on the Costa Classica in March 2012. We have a 1 day stop in Koh Samui- actually about 7 hours when you count getting back on board on time.

Weather permitting, we just want to go to the beach and chill for the day.

We dock at Nathon, I want to try Chaweng Beach (busy and touristy I know).

Has anyone done a day like this before? If so how did you organise it?

Is transport difficult/ expensive from the port?

I have been told that it is about a 40 minute trip. I am also unsure if the beach is accessible to the public or if it is only available to hotel guests?

Have been there three times on cruises (Princess and Star). Each time we used the cruiselines' shuttles (at a cost). The beach is lovely, plenty of restaurants, shade, hawkers on the beach ... but also lots of shops in the street up from the beach. There were plenty of shuttle busses and only a short wait to get back to the ship. It was about a 40 minute trip but interesting to see a bit of the island.

We are thinking of spending about 10 nts here post cruise. Opinions on this idea would be welcome as all the info we have is from travel agent and there is nothing like advice from someone who has actually been there. Thanks
