MarieAtSea Posted January 7, 2012 #1 Share Posted January 7, 2012 Is there a railroad for a day trip only, round trip, from Anchorage? We arrive 5 days before the cruise and will be staying in Anchorage. Don't want to spend the night anywhere else. If more than one, what do you recommend? JUne 2012. Thanks! Budget Queen Posted January 7, 2012 #2 Share Posted January 7, 2012 Are you sure of this Anchorage decision?? You are greatly limiting yourself to some lackluster plans compared to other areas of Alaska. 5 days is a LOT of time for some excellent touring options, outside of Anchorage. As for your question- are you on a cruise?? IF so, what port? You can easily do the train to/from that port, with me, strongly suggesting you consider some touring as well. A Seward day trip is long and tiring. I only suggest an overnight, and with that- you need something to do once you get there. Round trip Whittier- same thing- are you open to a boat tour of Prince William Sound? There is also Spencer Glacier, Grandview day trips to consider. Could also go to Talkeetna, for a few hours. Again, I suggest you find out about these areas and determine where it best suits your interests and activity priorities. http://www.alaskarailroad.com/Destinations/tabid/129/Default.aspx
oaktreerb Posted January 7, 2012 #3 Share Posted January 7, 2012 Go to the ALASKA.ORG website and look under transportation. It will give you the Alaska Railroad schedule and options. Travelers who have returned from a 8-10 hour roundtrip on the railroad have reported that it was just too long. There are plenty of suggestions on this website to help you plan your vacation. You have lots of time to enjoy seeing the area. The Alaska Railroad will also send you a brochure if you prefer.
