I was reading up on the Costa Concordia tragedy trying to keep up to date and a student at my daughter's university posted a link to a website regarding an update. In the sidebar, I found this article.

Obviously I know there are positives and negatives to everything but this article really irritated me. Thoughts? Opinions?

The Daily Beast is not very well regarded or respected. There's a good reason. Their silly little list illustrates and proves why.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Did a June 7-19, 2011, Solstice cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik. Enjoyed great weather and a wonderful trip. Dozens of wonderful visuals with key highlights, tips, comments, etc., on these postings. We are now at 57,832 views for this live/blog re-cap on our first sailing with Celebrity and much on wonderful Barcelona. Check these postings and added info at:

With my daughter being a journalism student I'm well aware of the Daily Beast not being well respected. It's just a shame that this list could be seen by thousands of first time cruisers and petty scenarios could affect someone's decision on whether or not to cruise.

If you scroll down, you'll find that a "related story" is headlined, "Why 'Manscaping' Isn't Just for Porn Stars Anymore." So I wouldn't exactly consider them to be a reliable or even a serious source.

Not like it matters but was that actually apart of that newspaper's content or was it an ad?

And while it may not be a serious and reliable source there are other stories just like it. I'm sure a simple Google search would turn up hundreds if not thousands of results. Not to mention the recent Costa Concordia tragedy has played a part in people's vacation planning. Though similar threads have mentioned cruise sales and prices going up after the tragedy.

That "manscaping" article was a "news" article. As you read through most of the Daily Beast headlines, you can tell pretty quickly that most of these items are mostly "opinion" and/or slanted to the writer's or website's more liberal view of the world and nation. That's their right, but you can pick up quickly that their style is far different from conventional "journalism" or whatever that means these days.

News, like more things in life these days, is "buyer beware". Most people can sort out these things, somewhat, kind of.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

As stated by the other commenters, the entire article is full of quack. The statistic on mysterious disappearances seem to pop up regularly when cruising is discussed, though:

A surprising number of people disappear from cruise ships. The Guardian reported that there have been 171 mysterious disappearances since 2000.

Seeing as on average 10-12 million people cruise per year, it is surprising that ONLY 17 a year mysteriously disappear. With those kind of odds, I'm seriously considering cruising 365 days a year :D.

Not that I needed a bogus stastic to convince myself

Just curious. Why did the article irritate you?

Stupid 'news' articles of all types are irritating. What passes for news these days is often 10% fact and 90% someone's opinion (and that holds true regardless of one's beliefs). When I see this kind of stuff I say consider the source. People not smart enough to do that are probably not the kind of people who would be cruising anyway. Just sayin'.

Same could be said for Fox News, CNN, and 90% of all other outlets.
