whylion Posted January 29, 2012 #1 Share Posted January 29, 2012 We are on the Glasgow to Reykjavik cruise in May. Having given up on the ridiculous Silversea air package, we are buying the air tickets ourselves. What time will be allowed on the ship in Glasgow - the ship leaves at 5pm. Also, it arrives in Reykjavik (form another port in Iceland) at 7 am. Is it reasonable to get a flight out of Keflavik at 1030, or is that too early? It seems to be about a 45 minute drive from downtown Rekjavik. Thanks, Nancy
Rare RachelG Posted April 3, 2012 #2 Share Posted April 3, 2012 We are on the Reykjavik-Longyearbyen cruise right after yours. I too am wanting to know the answer to this question as I am wanting to have lunch in Reykjavik prior to boarding.
Rare jpalbny Posted April 3, 2012 #3 Share Posted April 3, 2012 whylion, you might make it to Keflavik in time for a 10:30 AM flight, but it's certainly our recommendation to do so... Reykjavik is a charming city and well worth seeing. There may well be traffic in/around the city at that time of day if it's a weekday. Can't remember if there were long lines at check-in or not. If it's at all possible, spend some time seeing Reykjavik and leave later. RachelG, would assume you dock in Reykjavik (rather than tender), as the port authority's website says you dock at the "Miðbakka" pier. That's the one right close to downtown, easily walkable, so you should have no trouble having a nice lunch before embarkation. Maybe you could be dropped at the pier early, leave your bags, and walk to lunch. Did you have a particular place in mind? We have spent a few days in Reykjavik, so we are wondering if it was somewhere we have been... Here is a link to their port authority (and yes, you can translate it to English in case your Icelandic is rusty)! http://faxafloahafnir.is/faxafloahafnir/en/
Rare RachelG Posted April 3, 2012 #4 Share Posted April 3, 2012 We have been to Reykjavik before, and are wanting to have lunch at the seafood cellar. If they are docking near downtown, we would definitely try to drop off bags and walk it. Love Reykjavik!
Rare jpalbny Posted April 4, 2012 #5 Share Posted April 4, 2012 RachelG, their website says that they've closed... http://www.sjavarkjallarinn.is/ Too bad; we heard good things about them but never made it there. We had dinner at Fiskfelagid (Fish Company), Humarhusid (Lobster House), and Tapas Barinn. Don't know if any of them are good for lunch, but the dinners.... Wow, they were all delicious, but make sure you hold on to your wallet! :)
Rare RachelG Posted April 4, 2012 #6 Share Posted April 4, 2012 Will have to check out the other suggestions. Yes, food is quite pricey in Iceland unless you stick to hot dogs (which are incredibly good, so maybe what we need to choose).
Rare RachelG Posted April 4, 2012 #7 Share Posted April 4, 2012 The seafood grill is also good, and we enjoyed previously. Just looked and they are open for lunch, so I will let my husband decide if he wants to do big bucks or hot dogs. They have bacon wrapped hot dogs in Iceland!
