I am sure that i read in the last link posted on here that Schettino said that passengers were entitled to a full refund if the order to abandon ship is given! it appears to be part of his arguement that Costa/Carnival are washing their hands of him because of the costs involved.

 

In other words pin the blame on him and the company are absolved for certain costs involved! i think he may have a point.

The logic goes: Corporations are evil greedy entities devouring the workers (and cruisers). If a ship sinks, it can not be the wrong doing of the captain. It must have been caused by the coporation not wanting an abandon ship order triggering refunds to the passengers. :eek:

Again, there is a world of difference between signaling for the passengers to muster and the "abandon ship call". Even if the ship had been able to get tugs and be moved back to port, the passengers should have been mustered and standing by. There have been several instances in the last few years where the guests were kept at "lifeboat stations" for several hours while the crew fought a fire, and were then allowed to return to normal activity. As I've said, one does not necessarily follow from the other (mustering to abandon ship). As soon as the ship was "not under command" (no propulsion), in restricted waters (close inshore), the passengers should have been mustered in preparation for any further actions. The allision (which is the technical term for a collision between one moving object and one stationary one) was stupidity, the failure to muster was negligence.

Cheng ... we have no arguement on that and i fully agree, the question asked by QT was whether a Full refund is due under the "Abandon ship" situation! my post was clearly to help that person and point to where it had been mentioned and nothing more.

I don't hate Schitino. I despise him as I despised the criminals I sent away for long tax payer supported vacations. Like Schitino, many of them were sociopaths who felt no compassion for other human beings and believed the world existed for their personal benefit and enjoyment.

Sorry, Sid, wasn't jumping on you. I was more pointing my post towards QT as well. I had read that article, and my eyes must have just glazed over when that part came up, because it is pure rubbish. I seem to recall something back at the beginning of this whole mess that Italy has this refund for abandoning ship, and I think that is entirely justified.

Why? Like them or not, they pointed to existing regulation, which is there for a reason.

 

But the regulation they point to was amended to exclude ships, which even they point out, so the regulation would need to be amended again to force the scrapping to be done in EU. Last year, while doing research on the Concordia, et al, I saw an article that stated there were about 100+ ships currently sitting around Europe waiting to be scrapped, because of the lack of local facilities, and the fact that even taking them to third world countries would not be economic. If there is this kind of backlog, where does Greenpeace expect to scrap the Concordia, without an infusion of money and TIME to rebuild a ship scrapping infrastructure, which they say is unacceptable for Italy. Go figure.

I rewatched a documentary that was mostly footage taken by passengers and crew. At one point it was announced overhead "Tango India, Tango India Lifeboat 3" I am wondering if anyone knows what this means with regard to the Costa Concordia? We were standing at Lifeboat #7 waiting to load our lifeboat and I recall looking toward Lifeboat #3 when they were starting to load it! Someone standing at our lifeboat said to our crew "they are loading lifeboat 3, let us get on our lifeboat too!" At this point I believe that the crew stepped aside from the opening on the railing and we started to load lifeboat 7 with heavy crowding. My DH was right behind me and had said to me that once the person ahead of me moved forward I was to stay close behind and not hesitate. The lifeboat was filled quickly without incident. I don't recall hearing the Tango India message overhead but I wonder if it meant that lifeboat 3 had been launched or was that giving them permission to launch??? It was very noisy at this point and I don't recall hearing the message but now that I've heard it on the documentary it has gotten me wondering.

which had no mention of Tango India. It is suggested in the link that some calls are standard, such as Bravo, but that some lines may have a different call for other issues.

 

It seems like we discussed this early on when various television programs had documentary shows on Concordia but can't recall what we came up with.

When we were at Giglio this past January we were told by Titan and Micoperi salvage workers that the rudders being removed were going to be transported to the Caribbean and used on another Costa ship!! Just an interesting tidbit we learned from a South African employee of Titan Salvage that was working on the dock at Giglio and who we were chatting with.

As they are expecting the removal in the next three months and considerable works would be needed to receive the wreck I find it surprising that the location of the yard has yet to be announced.

I haven't seen last weeks progress report yet although Giglio news have changed the format of their website. Has anyone else seen it yet?

The gov't has known for a very long time that the ship would have to go somewhere yet they are still unsure where.

 

With no port able to handle Concordia it seems highly unlikely that Italy will be able to take on the job.
