Safety Tips and Recommended Guidelines for 13 year olds

I made my kids eat with us every night, but they didn't mind. I also made them "dress" for dinner. For regular nights that meant polo shirts and khakis and for elegant night that meant dress pant, dress shirt, tie, and dress shoes. Again, they didn't mind. They were just so happy to be there. :D

Im doing the same. We are on the ship to spend time together. All dinners will be in the MDR and they will be dressed for them. They already know this. Now if there is some Circle-C dinner event, they may do that and I may find my way to the steakhouse.

I think I got everything from everyone's lists:

Kid Rules:

  • Use the buddy system.
  • Never go to someone’s room and especially never go in someone’s room.
  • Never let someone in our rooms. If the steward comes in, you leave.
  • Do not roam the state room parts of the ship. Stay in the public areas.
  • Treat the halls like a hotel. Be quiet. Don’t let the door slam.
  • Remember elevator etiquette and no hanging out there.
  • Use the stairs if only going up 1 deck, or down 2 decks.
  • Dress to go in the dining areas. Use a cover over bathing suits.
  • Stay out of adult only areas. May walk through casino, if necessary.
  • Never take a drink from any one.
  • Never leave your drink unattended. If you do get a new drink.
  • Do not go on the exposed decks after dark.
  • Check in with us at (meeting place at the muster station) at X time
  • No pool/waterslide without us.
  • No running on the ship.
  • Absolutely no throwing anything overboard or down stairwells
  • Be where you are supposed to be i.e. Pool/slide, pizza/ice cream, cabin, Circle C or Circle C listed activities -- no roaming.
  • Leave a note in the room or call if plans change.
  • No noise in room that can be heard from other rooms or the hallway
  • Must keep room clean with both clean & dirty clothes put away
  • Be in your room by curfew and do not leave until the next morning
  • Do not get off ship without us
  • Be quiet and considerate at all shows
  • Have fun
  • If you mess up, you will lose all your freedom.

I read a thread long ago which had what I thought was a great idea. The family had a couple of "meet up" times per day just to check in and see what everyone's plans were. I guess times varied from day to day, but their meeting place was always at their muster station - that way the kids had to be able to locate their muster station from whatever location they were in at the time. Lots of people follow the directions from their room to the muster spot, but couldn't remember how to get there from other locations on the ship. I thought this was a great idea for kids to learn how to get to the correct spot in case of emergency (of course, I wouldn't tell the kids that reason!).

I think this is a fabulous idea and will use it when our son gets old enough. VERY important for all family members, especially teens, to know how to get to the muster stations from various places on the ship.

Thanks for sharing this.

Wow - such lists - I'd be afraid to be a kid.

Our kids had the same rules they had at home, afterall, the ship is a mini city - so whatever rules you had at home have on the ship with the same consequences. We had 2.

Respect yourself and respect others - everything fell under this umbrella and believe me - they understood them.

I must say I agree with you. Our kids and grandkids started sailing with us at young ages and the grandkids now 9, 16 and 21 still sail with us....never had this many rules (although there were a few) and after a number of cruises never had a problem. I think that you will find that many more kids roam the ship together with their friends than don't.

I agree to an extent. Parents know their own kids and some kids do lack impulse control or common sense.

One thing I did learn here is throwing stuff overboard. I could easily see my son throwing a hamburger overboard. I will be adding that to my rules:)

This can get the whole family tossed off the ship at the next port of call.

I know. I just try to cover the bases of stupid things teen boys may come up with. The only reason I thought of this one was some you tube video I saw with some idiot kids throwing stuff off of an RCI ship - including an ashtray or large trash container if I recall correctly. I will warn my kids to quickly get far away from any kids doing anything like that.

Ah yes. I've been around a lot of teens. "The more kids in a group, the lower the collective IQ sinks."

1. Keep in touch check in no longer than an hour and a half.

2. NEVER go in anyone staterooms without my permission.

3. Do not anwser the door without and adult there.

4. Do not disturb anyone.

5. You can go anywhere accept adults only areas and crew areas.

6. Be quiet in the shows.

7. If Security or and Adult tells me you broke rules or I catch you you will be by me the WHOLE REST OF THE CRUISE.

If it would help I would broadcast his picture with a comment" If you see this kid doing something wrong or being disrespectful find me, I'll deal with him." It's too bad all parents don't have at least some of these rules! Kids with no rules = adults that don't know how to behave either!

We have cruised with our son since first grade and he is in college now. We gave him out expectitions of his behavior and the consequences, just like at home. We never had any issues. You have to know your kids and how much leverage you can give them.

I agree with this. I would add:

6. No running on the ship.

7. No hanging out in the elevators unless you are simply using them to get somewhere. (seems to be a popular past time on my cruises)

8. Absolutely no throwing anything overboard at all. (seen kids do this too much)

Yes, 6-8 are important, but my boys would never dream of doing those things. I know every parent says that, but my boys are really mellow and scared of my wrath. lol :D
