Hotels in Venice?

Recommended Posts

First, know that Venice is a very expensive hotel town...

What you might normally consider "not over the top expensive" may not apply here...

That said, the other question is what "good centrally located hotel" means...

There are two different schools of thought on Venice...

Some people think "Centrally located" means near the Piazza San Marco, since San Marco, for tourists, is the center of Venice...Hotels there can be a bit pricey and there are other costs to consider as well...Getting you and your luggage to some locations can cost quite a bit...You can't schlepp a lot of luggage with you onto a low-cost vaporetti...and water taxis can be pricey...

The other school of thought (and one I subscribe to) is to stay near the Piazza Roma...Piazza Roma is the transportation hub of Venice...and once settled into a hotel here, all of Venice is easily within reach by foot or by vaporetti (public bus/boat)...

I have stayed at two different hotels in this area on different trips:

The Carlton Executive

http://www.venice-hotel.carltongrandcanal.com/

...and

Hotel Capri...

http://www.hotelcapri.net/

Both are run by the same outfit and both are nice...Hotel Capri, I believe, is the more reasonably priced of the two...The location is close to the Piazza Roma and the Train Station...and depending on how mobile your luggage is, you can walk from either...

Once situated in the hotel, there is a Vaporetti Station on the Grand Canal virtually right there...One of three bridges over the canalis also right nearby...Between the RR Station and the Ghetto on Lista di Spagna, there are a number of reasonably priced restaurants...

Lisa: We stayed at the hotel Bellini near the trainstation. I have no idea what room rates are now but at the time it was the cheapest hotel over 3 star we could find. That being said Venice is very small and easy to sightsee (once you've gotten rid of your luggage) Do not be swayed by hotels that focus on how close they are to St. Marks square. Do not worry about being in a "bad" or "unsafe" area of Venice proper. We spent time walking the entire area and I did not find anyplace I would NOT stay. Find something within your budget in Venice itself. Do not agree to a hotel out by the airport. It will not have the same wow factor as Venice itself. The city is wonderful when all the day trip visitors are gone. Enjoy

Here's another excellent site with lots of information about Venice and links to a variety of sites you can check out hotels in Venice.

http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/

The site above has a special section for finding a hotel and an excellent article about hotels for cruise ship passengers including a good explanation of where the ships dock.

Hotels are definitely expensive in Venice but if you aren't interested in a big fancy one or one with a great canal view, some can be found that aren't terribly expensive for Europe and that are still a very comfortable place to sleep and bath and be comfortable in. If you are staying in Venice during the summer be sure the hotel and your room has A/C. Some of the older hotels don't have it and it can get pretty hot in Venice in the summer.

Have a great next cruise.

This June, we're staying at Locanda Orseolo. The hotel is very near St. Mark's Square and gets consistantly rave reviews on tripadvisordotcom. The also have a website: locandaorseolodotcom.

I also appreciate the hotel recommendations everyone has given!

One other question... has anyone ever stayed on Lido Island? I am looking favorably toward hotels there, but don't want to jump on something that I might later regret!

We'll be staying at Hotel Guerrato http://web.tiscalinet.it/pensioneguerrato in September for 1 night pre-cruise. We were actually booked at Locanda Orseola which sounds wonderful, but at less than 1/2 the price we decided to move to this hotel. Finding the market outside our window in the morning will be part of experiencing the real Venice for us.

You have to look a bit to find comments about the Guerrato, but they are there and very favorable! Tripadvisor doesn't have much, but you can find several on ricksteves.com. Here are a couple of reviews: http://www.eurocheapo.com/venice/listings/selection/guerrato.asp and http://www.frommers.com/destinations/venice/H49626.html
