Chair Hoggers on Cruise Ships .

Gary from PA

Recommended Posts

I make it appoint to avoid pool areas on ships at all costs but I have heard that the "removal and denial" method works if there is only a towel on the chair.

Step 1: Scout out a chair that is occupied by a chair hog's towel.

Step 2: Remove the towel used to save the chair and put it somewhere else

Step 3: When chair hogs return simply say "Oh, I'm sorry, it was empty when I arrived, would you like me to move?"

9 times out of 10 they will say no and run off to find a new locale.

It's not honest, but CH's don't play be the rules either.

I go a bit further, I watch the chairs.......about 30 minutes, if noone shows up I take whatever is on the chair and present it to the bar staff with a explaination and take the chair!:)

If they come back I explain there is a 15 time limit and tell them where thier belongs are!

Now if it meal times I'll wait longer, but normal times,30 minutes in my limit!

Being born without the subtlety gene, I would simply take the book or whetever off of the chair that I want to use, drop it on a chair two away and enjoy my new spot. 30 minutes? Forget it, three minutes and a quick look around.

Stack the chair hog items on one chair and let them fight over it.

I was thinking along the same lines, but was shy to express it ;)

If one removes all the stuff say after 20 mins, and stands one's ground, I doubt the CHOG has any grounds to fight. Its just a matter of being firm.

Plus if you are in a group it helps to ward off any intimidation.:D

CHOGS are bullies and its always good to confront a bully and not back down.:)

So by that logic, if I have a legit chair I am enjoying, reading a book, and I get up to get a drink or soda, leave my book on the chair its fair game after three minutes its fair game to be removed? Remind me not to cruise with you guys!! :P

What if I'm in the pool? :-/

I assume you'd then have to pack your things, take them to your cabin, go back to the pool, leave your towel/rope/coverup somewhere that's not a chair, go back to your room to get your things and find a new chair.

If you just go to get a drink take everything with you, get your drink and then find an empty chair to enjoy your drink.

Sounds good to me. No?

I am not a chair hog. But I am also unwilling to find a new place to sit multiple times a day. I will take my things with me if I go to have lunch or know that I'll be gone for 20+ minutes... but really, this whole chair hogging discussion scares me from using an "american" cruise line. I need to be able to go to the bathroom and get something to drink afterwards without worrying where (and if) I may find my towel and my book when I come back.

It's such a common complaint and there really does not seem to be a solution. You could stay at the finest resorts in the world and the chair saving goes on there too. There is definately a difference if you go in the pool or go to lunch. There is just too many times someone saves the chair and they don't use it the entire day.

All those sympathetic to chair hogging over 30 mins.

Chair does not belong to you and once you get up and move away from your chair, you dont create a right or an ownership of that chair or tittle to a deed.

Just like parking spots once you drive your car away the spot is free for others not yours even if you left your shoes or luggage on the spot !!

It may be inconvienient but chair hogging is "illegal" for anything but just a few minutes of dip in the pool or going for a drink

If it comes to a real fist fight, the hogger has no legal rights., if the hogger starts a fist fight to recover his chair.

German tourists in Europe are the World's most famous chair hoggers. Ask any non-German European if you dont believe me. In USA they might find their match :P

Chair hogging is an European art , perfected by the"Germans" in every sea side resorts in Europe, Greece and Turkey.

You are wellcome to not cruise "American" cruise ships if you are one of those "Germans " :D:D:D

While I have never been a chair hog, I guess I am just more easy going as well. These things do not bother me too much. I do not have to have a certain chair as long as I get a chair....

So...I guess it did not occur to me that if I went for a dip and spent over 15 minutes in the pool that someone might take my stuff and move it.

I travel 2-3+ times a year and have never had a problem.

I guess, to me, it just sounds rude if I were in the pool and someone moved my stuff. I completely understand that if I leave the pool area for any great length of time that I give up rights to the chair, as it should be.

Anyway.......I guess I would rather concern myself over other matters! :)

I have a different take on this to everyone else. I can always get a chair when I want one because I want to sit in the deepest, darkest corner of the deck, as far in the shade as possible.

In the past I loved sunbathing, until just after my 40th I was treated for melanoma. Still, it has one positive, I never have to fight the chairhogs. I guess there's an upside to everything!

Then I'll be pretty embarassed when you walk up to me soaking wet wanting your spot back.

Still, it's pretty easy to tell what chairs are being used. There's usually more than a book on them.

I'll be in the same corner though I like one with a view ;). I burn easily so I tend to stay out of the sun.

On a RCI cruise, I shared an elevator ride with a couple of 20-something girls who had spend a LOT of time in the sun. They had a very dark tan. They were discussing how tanned they were. Imentioned to them that they are going to look like a couple of well-used bomber jackets by the time that they are 40. Again, my lack of subtlety got me an elbow in the ribs from my wife.

what about on CC?

on our first cruise, we took 2 chairs - way way way down at the end (this was when there was only one family beach).

We put all our stuff on the chairs and then went to snorkel.

When we came back, all our stuff was all over the place in the sand (and some of our stuff was missing) - and the chairs were gone.

Would you consider what we did chair hogging?

we took chairs that we were going to lie in right after we snorkeled.

actually, we only took 2 chairs, even though there were 4 of us - we figured we'd share as we didn't want to be hogs.

But still our stuff was thrown onto the sand (and some of the stuff disappeared, never to be seen again - including our two bottles of sun screen).

so were we chair hogs? it's a beach. You're supposed to come and go when you're on the beach.

you sit on your chair and read. Then swim a little. Sit some more. Go eat lunch. Sit some more. Swim a little. Sit some more.

or do you expect me to sit on that chair on Castaway Cay non-stop or else remove my stuff?

What if the person is in the pool? There is no time limit, and I'd make quite a stink if you took my stuff while I was in the pool and then had the nerve to tell me there was a limit.

While I agree that if there is nothing on the chair but a folded towel and two year old copy of People and it's left unused for an hour or more, it's fair game. But if someone's cover up, sunscreen, book, and sandals are on/next to a chair for even two hours, it's being used by someone in the pool area and you touching their stuff is theft in my opinion.

At most truly fine resorts, there are pool attendants that when you arrive at the pool area ask if you want a chair in the sun or shade, near the pool or in a quieter area, and escort you there. That chair is then yours for as long as you choose to use it.

by the way, the reason this didn't happen on our second cruise - we didn't bother with the chairs after the first experience.

on my next cruise, i'm going to try to reserve a cabana, so that i don't have to deal with chair thieves. :)

"Legal Rights"? Who are you kidding?

If you take a chair and remain in the pool area (which includes going around the corner to use a rest room, get a drink, or being in the pool) that chair is yours to use as long as you'd like. There is no time limit and there is nothing "legal" or "illegal" about it. If the cruise lines had a policy forbidding use of a chair for more than 10 minutes at a time, they would print that policy and would enforce it. What some random cruiser decides is their personal policy is about as binding as a ruling by Judge Judy.
