tstr Posted April 20, 2012 #1 Share Posted April 20, 2012 We are leaving tomorrow for our first river cruise on the Danube with Avalon and I was wondering if they supply you with any maps of the towns that you dock in? We like to do some exploring on our own. Thanks!
Grandma of Lily Posted April 20, 2012 #2 Share Posted April 20, 2012 Yes they do. We did a cruise with Avalon last September on the Danube and they supplied maps together with details of how to get around towns (where appropriate) and back to the ship. jacksonnh Posted April 20, 2012 #3 Share Posted April 20, 2012 They also should provide you with the address of the ships location and telephone number in the event you need to take a taxis or call the ship. This info is usually available at the registration desk.
caviargal Posted April 20, 2012 #4 Share Posted April 20, 2012 Just a note to double check on how to get back to the ship and also to be aware that you may be the second ship in from the dock. On a recent river cruise, the person at the front desk marked the map incorrectly, sending us on a wild goose chase trying to find the boat that evening. Thank goodness a taxi driver we flagged down knew it was actually on another RIVER altogether - we were on a Moselle and Rhine cruise. The ship was barely a mile from where we were looking for it based on the map she had marked but we never walked in that direction as the map was very clearly marked. And on another occasion, we got back to the ship late at night and could not see it in the line of boats at the busy dock. The weather was awful and we could just not find the boat. We called the number for the boat and she kept telling us it was right there - eventually we figured out that it was behind another boat and not visible in the rain. Have a great trip and give my best to Andrea.
Rare Host Jazzbeau Posted April 20, 2012 #5 Share Posted April 20, 2012 There is a new 2.0 version of Rick Steves' Audio Guide with coverage for many areas of Europe. It's free, so you might want to download it for the places you are going. No network connection required once you have downloaded the programs. Even if you don't have an iPhone, you can get it in iTunes and listen on your Mac before you go.
