txladycruiser Posted May 18, 2012 #1 Share Posted May 18, 2012 I've been a little remiss on posting my blog entries for the past few ports but felt this is one port that shouldn't be missed if given the opportunity to go there: http://www.travelpod.com/z/thewrens/4/1337270706 Today, we are in Dubrovnik, docked next to the Oceania Riveria. It looks like a very nice ship. Karen
Travelcat2 Posted May 18, 2012 #2 Share Posted May 18, 2012 We were just in Kotor and agree with your comments. This is a stunning port!
poss Posted May 18, 2012 #3 Share Posted May 18, 2012 txlady-- thanks. (and always a thanks to TC) Did you hear from folks who took any of the Kotor excursions? (We'll not be able to do those steps, so would like to get out of the town a bit and see sights from above)
Travelcat2 Posted May 18, 2012 #4 Share Posted May 18, 2012 poss, we did the Historic Kotor and Seaside Resort of Budva. Budva was one of of the few places without alot of steps. The description of the tour talks about 2 hours of walking. The walking is in the walled town of Budva -- little shops and restaurants -- fairly flat. The description also talks about "easy climbing" -- for some reason I don't recall that. It was really a delightful tour -- lovely ride to the seaside. poss Posted May 18, 2012 #5 Share Posted May 18, 2012 TC: On the drive to Budva, did you get those great views of Kotor that people speak of who climbed the steps? (I remember, btw, that you suggested that the tours get to Budva later-- if only!....)
Travelcat2 Posted May 18, 2012 #6 Share Posted May 18, 2012 TC: On the drive to Budva, did you get those great views of Kotor that people speak of who climbed the steps? (I remember, btw, that you suggested that the tours get to Budva later-- if only!....) Had to ask my DH as the ports get mixed up in my mind. He says that there were great views from the coach as it drove up the hills on the windy coast road. We plan on watching a video this weekend and it should refresh my memory. Yes - I did suggest that tours get to Budva later (when the stores are open would be nice:-)
neviboy Posted May 18, 2012 #7 Share Posted May 18, 2012 I have 4 excellent views of Kotor taken at the top of the hill which we reached by taxi from the dock. I can send them from my computer to an e-mail address, but don't know how to get them onto C.C. I have framed one photo which is much admired. Hambagahle Posted May 21, 2012 #8 Share Posted May 21, 2012 the sail in to Kotor is so remarkable - going into the fjord (southernmost one in Europe, we were told!) between mountains on each side. And when we did it, it was also rainy and misty so it was even more incredible!! A lovely, lovely place in a super little country!!
rarin2go Posted May 21, 2012 #9 Share Posted May 21, 2012 the sail in to Kotor is so remarkable - going into the fjord (southernmost one in Europe, we were told!) between mountains on each side. And when we did it, it was also rainy and misty so it was even more incredible!! A lovely, lovely place in a super little country!! Agree absolutely!:) As we had loved Kotor last year, it was great to hear fellow cruisers, to whom we had recommended it this time, saying later that it was the highlight of the cruise for them. We were rather unlucky that we sailed in early morning and were forced by high winds to anchor in the Bay of Kotor until 2am so didn't really get the full impact of the sail through the 'fjord' either on the way in or on the way out. schub229 Posted May 27, 2012 #10 Share Posted May 27, 2012 Just finished reading your travelpod site from your trip, and it sounded wonderful! We're going from Venice to Istanbul on the Mariner next April and were wondering about some of the excursions. I haven't been to these areas since 1965-- when I was young and life was very different. We took almost the same trip in 2011 that you did, also-Auckland to Singapore on Crystal --because Regent bypassed Singapore and went up to China. Our son and his family were in Singapore so we wanted to see them. Really have enjoyed your blogs, Karen, and hope you continue on your next trips. Thanks for all the great photos, too. Where are you off to next?
txladycruiser Posted May 28, 2012 Author #11 Share Posted May 28, 2012 Thanks, Pat, for your compliments on our blogs! It helps us remember all the little details! We have a Silversea cruise planned for July 2013 - London Tower back to London Tower (England, Scotland, Ireland and Iceland). But, since that is about 14 months away, we are looking into doing something between now and July 2013. I will definitely be blogging, though! You will have a fantastic time on your Mariner cruise! Hope you are able to spend a couple of days in Venice and Istanbul, too. Karen

Don P Posted June 27, 2012 #15 Share Posted June 27, 2012 As someone with rheumatoid arthritis it would be impossible to climb 1500 steps both ways. Can you suggest something that will provide similar views but with no climbing? I've been a little remiss on posting my blog entries for the past few ports but felt this is one port that shouldn't be missed if given the opportunity to go there: http://www.travelpod.com/z/thewrens/4/1337270706 Today, we are in Dubrovnik, docked next to the Oceania Riveria. poss Posted June 27, 2012 #16 Share Posted June 27, 2012 Don: We can't do all those steps either, so I did a bunch of research trying to determine which of the various excursions might give us the best chance of seeing the wonderful scenery. We've chosen "Historic Kotor & Seaside Resort of Budva." We're on Mariner July 27, so I'll be happy to report back if your cruise is later than that. gcmv Posted June 28, 2012 #17 Share Posted June 28, 2012 @ Don: You can also take the tour "Highlights of Montenegro". The view from the top of the mountain down into the Kotor-fjord was the biggest impression on our Mariner cruise in May. It's unbelievable! Sorry - I don't know how to put photos in here, as I'm no computer-specialist, so just trust me ... ;)
poss Posted June 28, 2012 #18 Share Posted June 28, 2012 Ah, the "Highlights" tour. I would have liked to be able to do that excursion, but I kept reading that it's very twisty-turny. For people who don't get car-sick, it sounds like a fun way to go.
Wendy The Wanderer Posted June 28, 2012 #19 Share Posted June 28, 2012 Ah, the "Highlights" tour. I would have liked to be able to do that excursion, but I kept reading that it's very twisty-turny. For people who don't get car-sick, it sounds like a fun way to go. Ah yes, I'm with you poss! I only do twisty-turny if I can sit right at the front of the van or bus. Plus I usually take some kind of seasick medication.
gcmv Posted June 29, 2012 #20 Share Posted June 29, 2012 Yes it is twisty-turny, indeed. But the street is so narrow, that the coach is only able to drive very, very slowly. On our cruise Regent provided four seats on every tour for handicaped people in the first row behind the driver - they were never fully occupied. I think it will be no problem to ask the tour guide, that you want to sit there, because of your sickness problem.
