cocontom Posted May 25, 2012 #27 Share Posted May 25, 2012 OP lives in New Jersey, though. What about Amtrak? Are there any trains leaving later that day you can take home? Edit: You'd have to take the bus or a taxi to Newport News to get to the station, though, so it may not be any more viable. Whoops! I missed that part, I was trying to get her towards Wyoming instead. But it did look like there was a bus change in Baltimore, so I would think there would be one to either DC or NJ from there. bplazo Posted May 25, 2012 #28 Share Posted May 25, 2012 whoa...well thank you all for the advice. I am now officially scared.:(...and this little error will cost me over 150 bucks...for the hotel and for the additional day my landlord will charge me. sigh.... kinda starting to regret this trip...and I should be super excited right now. $2000+ in the hole and the costs keep growing. I am dead broke and I have an anxious personality. :( sigh...What kills me is now I have to be super conscious of my spending while on the cruise...I didn't want to have to worry about money. Guys, pray for me, and I will pray for you! Thanks. Just take a deep breath and go and enjoy your cruise. On our last cruise I did not spend any money (not on purpose) and I had a great time. I always tell my daughter if money fixes the problem then it is not a problem. It will work out.
ScouterKB Posted May 25, 2012 #29 Share Posted May 25, 2012 Check with Carnival, I believe the CTN cruises do not need customs or immigration clearance.
Rare Tapi Posted May 25, 2012 #30 Share Posted May 25, 2012 How about reserving a one way rental car? It wont cost you anything to reserve it (until you actually pick the car up). That way, if you don't make your bus, you'll have plan B.
mlzangel78 Posted May 25, 2012 #31 Share Posted May 25, 2012 if you do not use the return ticket for greyhound you will get a refund , you can call them and cancel the Return trip, get a rental car at port and drive home... thats the best way to do it if you can, use the refund of the return trip to pay for the rental car. daijayx2 Posted May 25, 2012 #32 Share Posted May 25, 2012 How about reserving a one way rental car? It wont cost you anything to reserve it (until you actually pick the car up). That way, if you don't make your bus, you'll have plan B. Most one way rentals have an additional drop of fee that the op may not be able to afford plus gas. IMHO I don't think you will make it. I would have a back up plan or when you get to greyhound see if you can be re-routed. Which sometimes can be done. You may have to ride the bus for a little longer than before but eventually you will make it back home. I almost had this done once my bus had broke down in Arkansas and I missed my transfer in Louisiana for my final destination in Florida so I was going to be rerouted on another bus and go into Texas then back thru Shreveport and onto Florida. I would have to be on the bus for an additional 7 hours or so. So instead I opted to get a room and come back in the am and catch the transfer onto Florida. Some people had no choice but to either take the rerouted bus thru Texas and back or sleep in the terminal till the next morning. I was lucky enough to find a low price hotel with free shuttle service to the greyhound and surrounding casinos I should add :) and just went with that option. I already had a long enough bus ride 27 hours, then add the 5 hours we were broke down. I didn't want to be on the bus for another 7 hours and go west to go east. But as I said other passengers had no choice because they didn't want to spend the money or couldn't afford a hotel. Chigirlcruzin Posted May 25, 2012 #33 Share Posted May 25, 2012 Check with Carnival, I believe the CTN cruises do not need customs or immigration clearance. This is a 6 day cruise going to Freeport and Nassau, not a CTN. They will have to go through customs.
Host Faith Posted May 25, 2012 #34 Share Posted May 25, 2012 I would consider renting a car from Norfolk and driving to NJ. Looking on Hotwire it's about $84 to rent a car for the day. That way you can have a little more control over traveling back home. If you can get a refund for your bus ticket, that can absorb some of the cost. I know it's a little tight, but you don't absolutely have to spend a lot of money on your cruise to have a good time. And the peace of mind, IMO, would be worth it. No need having the stress of that morning undoing all the benefits of the relaxation you got during the cruise.
Izzygirl1985 Posted May 26, 2012 Author #35 Share Posted May 26, 2012 Hey guys. Ok..so update: We decided to purchase a 1:20pm ticket to NYC. It cost $80 bucks for the both us...so not too bad. So two scenarios can happen...both of which means we lose money. If we can catch the 8:30am bus, then we lose the 80 bucks. If, however, we miss it, then we catch the 1:20pm to NYC and lose 93 bucks. Its all good though. We have resolved to make this a fun trip no matter what. We plan on not spending more than $500. Neither of us are big drinkers so I am guessing ~$40/day...for just foo-foo drinks, ~$100 for souveneirs, ~$150 for excursions, $50 extra tips?...and the rest will be for anything else.:D Cannot wait!:D
Izzygirl1985 Posted May 26, 2012 Author #36 Share Posted May 26, 2012 BTW...MAJOR MAJOR THANKS to all of you kind folks. Sooo glad I asked and received such awesome response. The way I look at it is that even if we do catch the 830am bus and all this was just a false alarm, I can still feel good and calm on the morning of debarkation as opposed to having multiple MIs as I the minutes go by. Also, if I would have learned about the possibility of missing my bus while onboard, then I may never have had the chance to request for an early self assist debarkation, nor would I have been able to set up a plan be while onboard and most likely would have been super stressed the entire vacation. So again, BIG THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!:D

CRUISE4JANE Posted May 26, 2012 #40 Share Posted May 26, 2012 LIZZY - I hope you have a wonderful trip and things work out for you. I wish your Landlord could have given you an extra day without paying. Sounds like she does not have that much compassion IMO.
