Ajaccio, Corsica - WHAT TO DO???

I can't find much info on Ajaccio, Corsica. Has anyone been there/done that on their own? Ship's tour (1 !?!) sounds pitiful and is likely to be crowded. Please help if you've been there... thanks.

We were there a few years ago. Your ship should dock right down town. Easy walk to the out door market and not too far from the beach. Here is what I wrote in my review.

 

In Ajaccio we walked around town going to the market and walking along the waterfront. The beach closest to the ship was not that great but the one a little further was much better. We walked back to the ship for lunch and talked to some people who took the #5 bus to Ilse Sanguinares . After lunch we found the #5 bus but since it only ran once an hour we only had time to take the ride along the coast to the Ilse Sanguinares and return with out getting off the bus. It was a nice drive and we wish we knew about earlier.

Ajaccio is a beautiful, easy town to do on your own. It's very close to the ship and there are many select, small shops in which to browse and cafes & restaurants in which to try the local wine etc. There is a good beach , a little tourist train that will take you around the town and also the house of Napoleon Bonaparte to visit if you enjoy history. It's a good place just to wander around and has a very central post office if you wish to post cards etc .The ice cream is to die for! If you have a busy cruise this is port where you can have an easy, relaxed day if you wish. It's one of our favourite ports of call.

Right, Ajaccio is a beautiful town to spend a few hours just walking around, browsing through the market, enjoying coffees and cakes. If you want to see a bit of the countryside - walk a few minutes to the left after exiting the port, there is a HoHo bus that takes you through the city and out to the Isle de Sanguinaire. It's about an hour and a half and it stops for 20 minutes at its furthest point. But you can use the next bus and take a walk along the beach or the road up the Isle.

I'm wondering the same too. How can you get to the nicer beaches? We really wanted to go to the beach at least one day during our cruise.

Things to do in Ajaccio itself include the colorful market, packed with some very Corsican fare (some of it nearly as pungent as the local maquis), the Musee Fesch, a great art gallery packed full of work collected by Napoleon's uncle, the Maison Bonaparte, where Napoleon was born, and pretty Saint Francois beach, under the walls of the Citadel.
