Anyone off Freedom today?

They're "No See-ums" and I think they are getting worse in Florida and the Caribbean. They probably came from the paths or wet places near the beach on Cocoa Cay. We were on the Atlantic side in Florida (Melbourne Beach) a couple of weeks ago. Here is a photo of my bitten and swollen feet: http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z78/plhunt2/005.jpg[/img]"]:o

I remembered the bug spray...but I missed my feet. And they itch like crazy!

 

Wow, you poor thing.. They look like sand flea bites with an allergic reaction added! Did you take Benadryl and use calamine lotion to soothe itching? If they are sand fleas the itching may last a week or so.... Ouch!

You have them too? :( We may be re-thinking this idea of moving to Florida, K.

and that is why we have an enclosure over our pool!:p

I do not think they are no-seeums. They really do look like sand flees. I have lived in Florida for over 30 years and have not had a no-seeum in years.

They have lots of common names. :D They all refer to the same, very, very tiny biting insect.

 

common name: biting midges, no-see-ums, punkies, sand fleas, sand flies

scientific name: Culicoides spp. (Insecta: Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)
