Cozumel (Island of the Swallows) is an island in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula,

opposite Playa del Carmen[/url], and close to the Yucatan Channel.

 

 

 

 

Cozumel is one of the ten (10) municipalities of the State of Quintana Roo.

 

The main town on the island is SAN MIGUEL de Cozumel.

Cozumel is a flat island based on limestone, resulting in a karst topography.

 

The highest natural point on the island is less than 15 m (49 ft) above sea level.

Tourism, diving and charter fishing comprise nearly all sources of income in COZUMEL, Mexico.

 

There are more than 300 restaurants on the island and many hotels, some of which run dive operations, have swimming pools and private docks.

At the end of the Pier @ PUERTA MAYA, Cozumel: A/C, Tequila tastings, lods of shopping opportunities and... live music!

The beauty of this Duty Free (outside the convenience of being located close to the cruise ship within walking distance)?

 

With a big smile and bit of Spanglish, they agreed to hold our purchases

(so we picked them up later that day while returning to the cruise ship)! GRACIAS!

Remember? There are more than 300 restaurants on the COZUMEL island!

 

It's a small island... Still, as soon as you get off the Duty free, at least two (2) temptations are opening up right in front of you:

As you turn to your left by the Pier @ Puerta Maya, there is "Fat Tuesday" - "the big palapa hut with our name on the top."

 

 

Their Motto: "EVERYDAY is a Fat Tuesday!"

Met our friends from last night's Steakhouse dinner and stayed for a chat, enjoying a cold Corona while having all three (3) cruise ships in sight!

Enjoyed "Fat Tuesday" not only because the company of some nice people from our Conquest cruise ship

but also for the great photo opportunities that the place offer with original 'frames' for pictures and the ships in the background!

Been to Mexico before and also to Cozumel, so this time around decided not to go to Downtown or repeat some of the popular excursions.

 

 

Before heading to the main destination for the day (Chankanaab) took some time to explore the area by the Pier in PURTA MAYA, Cozumel.

 

 

It was yet another glorious day and with thousands of passengers in land, managed to bump into more friends sharing some more laughs!

Effective October 16, 2008 (Puerta Maya’s opening day), all passengers will be given a unique beach and coral reef etiquette card.

 

This card which consists of a small map of the COZUMEL island, and the importance of the preservation of the coral reefs and the island beaches.

 

The cards will be available in English at selected location in the cruise terminal. The cards can also be used as a souvenir or a bookmark.
