Dabaras Posted January 16, 2013 #26 Share Posted January 16, 2013 There isn't a tremendous difference between any of the cameras out there right now. If you have an opportunity to play with them in the store, the things to consider for underwater are how fast it will focus and how easy the controls are to use. I like nice big buttons for underwater use when possible. Also a brighter LCD on the back makes it easier to frame your shots underwater.

Also look for robust seals on the battery compartment, positive locks that are not easily unintentionally dislodged, a lens configuration that will not trap water drops, and I strongly second the big buttons and controls that are simple to operate under limited vision conditions. BillyBuff Posted January 22, 2013 #28 Share Posted January 22, 2013 I have the Panasonic Lumix TS20 16.1 MP TOUGH for underwater use. Here's an underwater video I took last May while in Mexico..
g8sharkman Posted February 11, 2013 #29 Share Posted February 11, 2013 Curious if anyone is looking at the new Olympus TG-2. I was considering the Nikon AW100 for the upcoming cruise, but the TG-2 releasing this month looks pretty great.. http://www.getolympus.com/us/en/tg-2-ihs.html
DaisyandSika Posted February 17, 2013 #30 Share Posted February 17, 2013 how much could one expect to pay for a decent underwater camera ? I have a very good Canon Rebel Ti DSLR so not too concerned for a expensive camera. could I find something around 100 $ ? I picked up an Olympus Tough 620 at Shoppers Drug Mart on sale for $150. I was concerned about taking my Canon T3 on the beach, and damaging the lenses with sand. A DiCaPac for the Canon is $120, so I decided to pick up a point and shoot instead. Still waiting for some decent weather and free time to test it out and compare the quality.

I was considering the Nikon AW100 for the upcoming cruise, but the TG-2 releasing this month looks pretty great.. http://www.getolympus.com/us/en/tg-2-ihs.html I bought the TG-1 last summer upon release and, while it was very easy to use, I was pretty disappointed in the quality of the photos (none taken underwater), particularly given how pricey it was, and returned it. Obviously, I can't speak to the TG-2. Last month, just before leaving for Antarctica, I saw that Nikon had slashed the price on the AW100, and I picked one up to have a waterproof camera while on the zodiacs and in other wet spots. I really liked how well it performed. (Again, I wasn't shooting underwater, so I can't speak to that.) Here are a couple of examples: (AW100 photos by turtles06)

It's good to know what my AW100 will do next time we get to snorkel. (Also, your pics brought back fond memories of our own Grand Cayman swim with the sting rays. (Also, your pics brought back fond memories of our own Grand Cayman swim with the sting rays. Thanks! :)) glad you liked my photos and video..sorry my photos were not all that great because I got my camera the day before we left for the ship and did not practice with the new camera so sometimes a bit shaky. Also the waves did not help with trying to stay steady but that was all the fun. :) I really enjoyed te sting ray swim. a bit nervous at first. but calmed down as the time when by and even held and kissed the ray :) ıt was an awesome experience and the snorkelling was a blast. so many colorful fish .
