Luggage and a stopover

We are flying in January on a United flight from Pittsburgh to LAX arriving at 10 pm. Our onward flight to Auckland, NZ on Air New Zealand is not until the next day at 9 pm. Will we need to collect our checked bags in LAX or will they be checked through to NZ? I am thinking there might be too much time between flights. Both flights are ticketed together. If we do not need to retrieve them, I am a little uneasy about all that time for the bags to get lost in LAX. Also, if we do need to retrieve them, will United charge us baggage fees? The tickets are booked through Air New Zealand. I know we will need to go through security again because we are staying the night in a hotel.

It is what it is but just trying to figure out what we will need to do after the five hour flight late at night.

Thanks.
