Cruise behind the scenes

We went on the All-Access Tour last March on Liberty. Initially, the $150 seemed steep, but I justified it by the fact that I was not doing any kind of Shore Excursion in Cozumel. Plus, I am fascinatined by the inner workings of things, so I probably would have done it anyway!

You can only sign up for it once on board - at the Excursions Desk (not in advance via RCCL, in other words), so we did this upon boarding the first day. They contact you once they have reached the minimum number required for the tour re: the time and meeting place of the tour. Ours was conducted during our last sea day

We saw:

- The Bridge

- The Galley

- The Food and Liquor Provisioning Areas

- The Officer's Lounge

- The Laundry (which they call Chinatown!)

- The Furniture/Woodworking Shop)

- The Behind-The-Stage Area in The Theater

- The Anchor/Rope Area just under the Helipad

- The Engine Control Room

And all was accompanied by some fascinating narratives given to us by the people in charge of those areas. You could tell how proud each of those folks was about their ship and their job. All were more than happy to answer all the questions our group had.

They have a limit of 14 people and if they do not get a minimum of 8, they will cancel. We had exactly 8, but one no-showed ... fortunately they ran the tour for us anyway as we were all at the starting point and ready to go (and the escort was standing with her back to the railing... she was afraid tosay NO! :p).

Just be sure you are ready for some climbing of steep stairwells and alot of walking -- you are literally ALL over that ship -- even go below the waterline on the engine room and laundry visits!

It was absolutely a fascinating way to spend 3 hours of a sea-day and I very highly recommend it !

P.S. (One Thing We Learned ... This Is A Quiz):

The Provisioning Manager told us when he was trained for his job , there is ONE item a ship is NEVER -EVER- to run out of. Anyone know what that is ?

Nope (though that was my guess too!) ... actually its RICE.

There are so many Asian people working on the ship and since its the staple of their diet, they were never to run outta rice - otherwise face a mutiny!. I thought what was a pretty cool little fact-oid!

I have to disagree with you. On our tour everyone that spoke with us was on duty at the time. From the 3rd officer on the bridge, the crew in the engine control room, the chef in the kitchen and even the laundry officer. Also what do you mean the "right people"?

Their words, not mine!
