Extra tips on ships in Europe

I know that we need to tip the baggage handler in Southampton prior to our cruise so I would assume we would tip in GBP, correct? What about for on board, are US dollars still good. I always bring lot of one dollar bills for room service and extras and figured I would do the same this time around if it was okay.

Thanks!

I personally like US $2.00 bills.

My savings and loan has managed to get me uncirculated $2.00 bills several different times (they come in packs of 100 = $200.00).

I do try to tip stevedores ashore in local currency - but the crew aboard is used to American money, and change it at the Purser's Office.
