Tauranga , not only popular with cruise passengers...

Recommended Posts

There was an interesting item on a TV magazine programme through the week about cruise ship calls at Tauranga. Seems that it has become a major port for the provisioning of supplies. Just about everything comes from the States in containers, many of which are frozen, and its loaded at Tauranga.

Even Australian and NZ produce which has been exported to the States comes back to be loaded onto the ships.

Heres a shot from Diamond Princess in Tauranga today, looking at Sun Princess. You can clearly see the containers lined up , ready to be loaded on board.

I can imagine that it would be an excellent port to reprovision. Plenty of room at the dock - and plenty of access to the dock. AND there is a great Macs Brewhouse in the village :D

Hi Barry,

Its also an excellent location , in that the containers are easily shipped into the port and are ready and waiting for the cruise ships.

I dont think a lot of people realise just how much of the food and provisions on board comes from the States.

The main thrust of the TV news item was to ask...

Just how much do cruise ships contribute to the economy and they followed the Executive Chef as he checked the "fresh local provisions" and then showed the massive amount of goods that had been shipped in to restock the ship......

they also caught up with the Chef again at a local ...

having good old fish and chips.:D
