LAX - Hampton Inn

Looking for a good Hampton Inn near restaurants for pre/post cruise, January 2014. Will also need pre-cruise transfer to LAX port. Any ideas?

How many days will you be staying on both ends of the cruise? What port are you leaving from (Long Beach or San Pedro)? Do you want stay near the port or some other area?

Will you be renting a car?

Any attractions you want to see?

Both ports are 15-20 miles from LAX (airport). Taxi will be very expensive; I recommend a shared van (Super Shuttle or Primetime). There are many threads on this board with the details. Due to the distance, no port-area hotels offer courtesy shuttles.

Time for a bit of DIY work :) Start with Google Maps...pull up the LA area, and enter "Hampton Inn". It will show all of them in the area. Note that none are very convenient to the airport or docks. That increases shuttle van fares a lot, and you will have to probably use taxis as well or rent a car.

Are you restricted to Hampton? The locations are very inconvenient without a rental car and there are much better choices.

Get familiar with the "lay of the land" and let us know which port and Hampton location you need. Then we can better answer your question with that info.

I think some of the cruiselines make it confusing for those unfamilar with Los Angeles by using the term "LAX" to indicate a cruise leaving from the Port of Los Angeles. We locals use LAX to indicate Los Angeles International Airport, not to indicate the harbor area, as they are a distance from each other. Princess and some other cruiselines (other than Carnival) leave from the World Cruise Center which is at the Port of Los Angeles in the community of San Pedro (we locals either refer to this area as "The Harbor" or "San Pedro").

So when you're looking for a hotel or motel, do not plug in the phrase "LAX" as you might just get airport area hotels (which you most likely won't want unless you have an early flight out the next morning).

So the next question is if you really need a Hampton Inns or will another Hilton brand do?

Sometime to think about is if you can stay at another hotel near the port that will transport you there for no additional charge, it may be worth your while to consider that option (For the port of LA, staying at the San Pedro Crowne Plaza or Doubletree; if you're on a Carnival ship, you most likely will use the Port of Long Beach -- then you can do a search of Bruin Steve's hotel posts for good (and safe) recommendations). You'll just need to get to the hotel, but you'll be close to the port and be able to walk safely to restaurants and even make a trip to stores for anything you've left behind.

Also, Amtrak uses "LAX" to designate LA Union Station. It's downtown about 15 miles from both the airport and cruise docks.
